Outlook Mail Message Icons

Original question:
My email icons don't change when I reply or forward emails. I simply get
some text in the top that says "You made changes to another copy of this
item. This is the most recent version. Click here to see other versions."
Only when I go back to the older version, do I see the icons change. What's
going on? If I have to do this for every mail I reply to, I'll go nuts...

Roady asked for more details... so here they are:

Version of Outlook: 2003 SP2
Type of Account: Enterprise

Where do I see the message:
When you double click a message, usually at the very top, you see some text
telling you when you replied to that mail or when you forwarded that mail...
Well, that's where I see this message which says "You made changes to another
copy of this item... ... ... ... other versions."

This is basically on messages in my Inbox. Typically what you should see is
a list of messages with the little "forward" or "back" arrows on top of teh
mail icons. This tells you what messages you have forwarded or replied to.
Well, in my case, I don't see those icons at all. So, what do I do? I open
the mail item, right click at the very top, replace the item with whatever
the "another version" is, and THEN viola... I see the icons change.
It is almost as if Outlook thinks I modified the mails I receive.

Thanks for your help.
Regards
