Outlook Instant Search suddenly stopped working

The instant search in my Outlook 2007 suddenly stopped working, as did the
Windows Desktop Search. I have tried to re-index, but it never finishes, and
each time it re-starts it shows a different number of 'items left to scan' -
49,056, then 12, 306, then 13,299, then 33,218 all with 0 'items indexed so
far'. I have let my computer sit idle overnight with only the index running
and it still never finished. I let it sit idle 8 hours during the day and it
never finished.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, running Win XP SP2, Outlook 2007.

Can anyone help me?

I am having the same problem too. Instant search was not working at all in
Outlook 2007, so I could not locate any e-mails. The program said I needed
install Windows Search 3.1. I installed Windows Search 3.1, after removing
3.0, and now the indexing won't stop. Each time I check staus, the numbers
keep increasing like on your machine.
