Outlook hangs when inserting an attachment

I have a user whose Outlook hangs anywhere from 40 to more than 60 seconds
when he tried to insert an attachment of any size into a new message. User is
running Windows XP with SP1 and Outlook 2003 with SP1. The Exchange server is
2003 with SP1. The user starts Outlook, clicks on the New message icon,
enters a recipient name and subject. He then clicks on the paperclip icon
which displays the Insert File dialog. Clicks on Look in, selects Desktop,
clicks on a file, clicks Insert and then Outlook hangs. We had the user log
onto another PC and the problem followed. We deleted his mailbox and
recreated it on another Exchange server, the problem still exists. We removed
his Logon script, which mapped logon drives, also removed his Home folder
drive and problem still exists. We have noticed that when he clicks on the
Desktop, some of the icons are initially blank. If we wait for the icon
picture to appear, 40 to 60 seconds later, we can insert the file
immediately. Any idea as to what is causing this problem?

it's usually an issue with mapped drives - are you sure you had all of them
disconnected?
