Outlook freezes when I try to open a link

Hi, I have Outlook Express 6 and it has been trouble free for many years.
However today I have had problems. When I try to open a link in an email the
entire program freezes and I have to ctrl/alt/del to close it and then
restart. The same thing happens when I try again.
The synopsis of the problem says that it is 'hang' and cannot offer any
specific solution.
Has anyone got any idea what may be the cause of this.
