Outlook Express NOT saving BLOCKED sender list?

G

Guest

Has anyone else noticed this?

Recently (a few months back) I noticed the BLOCKED SENDER list in Outlook
Express is emptied every time it's closed. Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't that
mean the senders I block (who send me ie. spam) are not being blocked if I
close the program?
How do I get back the SAVE for blocked senders? I'd want to program to SAVE
the blocked senders like it used to do.

Yours,
Thor

Forget about getting the list back. It's gone. But blocking Spam
using Blocked Senders is a waste of time since they constantly change
their addresses.

Close OE. Go to: Start>Run>Regedit>find this key (Blocked Senders)
and delete it:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Block Senders

Blocked Senders list will be empty, but you can rebuild it now.

Try some Message Rules. A few ideas here:

It has happened to me.

It can be caused by a corrupt Registry entry. I deleted it, and then OE
regenerated it and behaved normally. (Every entry in the list was lost, of
course.)

The key is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{Identity Number}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Block Senders

( "{Identity Number}" is something long, and specific to your installation.)

It may be worthwhile to read:

"OLEXP: How to Backup and Restore Outlook Express Blocked Senders List and
Other Mail Rules"

although it doesn't mention your particular problem.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Hi Thor,

1) Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

2) Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Block Senders

Where the {8A067580........} number is the GUID for the identity that you're
using (it will be different on your machine).

3) Right click on the Block Senders subkey and select Export. In the Save
As dialog, give the file a name and save it to the same folder the
restore_blcksend.vbs file is in. You're exporting this branch as a backup.

4) Expand the Block Senders branch and right click on the Mail subkey and
select Export. In the Save As dialog, give the file MAIL.REG as the name
and save it to the same folder the restore_blcksend.vbs file is in. In the
Save as type: pull down, select 9x/NT4, or the script won't work.

5) Right click on the News subkey and select Export. In the Save As dialog,
give the file NEWS.REG as the name and save it to the same folder the
restore_blcksend.vbs file is in. In the Save as type: pull down, select
9x/NT4, or the script won't work.

6) Double click the restore_blcksend.vbs file.

7) The script will prompt you when finished.

Note: In the event that the script cannot find MAIL.REG or NEWS.REG it will
error out. Both MAIL.REG and NEWS.REG must be present. Additionally, if
you neglect to choose 9x/NT4 as the type of REG file, it will error out.

Forget about getting the list back. It's gone. But blocking Spam using
Blocked Senders is a waste of time since they constantly change their
addresses.

That may be true as far as SPAM is concerned, but the Blocked Sender feature
is invaluable in blocking IDIOTS on newsgroups that constantly post wrong
answers, abusive answers or are constant Microsoft/Windows bashers. These
people rarely recognize their worthlessness and change their eMail address.

Find and remove a Blocked Sender address:

OE>Tools>Message Rules>Blocked Senders List>Highlight the first
address on the list>Click Modify>Type in address you want to remove.
"This address already exists, are you sure you want to replace
it?">Click Yes. Address will now be at the top of the list. Now you
can remove it.

Note: The address that was at the top of the list will also be
removed, so you might want to copy it to re-enter.

I use message rules for that. And, I also have a few regular PITA
posters set to highlight in color so I don't reply and get stuck
holding their hand for days. :)
