Outlook express giving 11004 error and newsreader 205 error

S

see.cher

I have isp, hotmail, and yahoo set up in outlook express.
desktop wired to router, winXP sp2
was working fine.

something happened - an MS update or a reg cleaner issue
now OE can't find the ISP server but the hotmail and yahoo work fine.
gives me an 11004 error.
when I run my newsreader it can't find the isp news server either.
gives me a 205 error

browser works fine.

I have two laptops connected wireless to the same router and there is
no problem with them. news reader and all email works.

tried uninstalling and reinstalling OE. same thing - not sure if it
actually did the un-re install.

my thought is leaning toward the reg cleaner taking out something it
should not have.

BUT what and how to get it back in???????????????????????????

I don't normally go to bed at lunchtime.

It funny how you insist on justifying your stupidity.

The complete error message would help. Lacking that:
Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection.

The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express
Published: November 18, 2004

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...6d4e006aaa94/4ba5fc8ef939c44c88256c7500723cf0

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

the error message is that it is not finding the server.

it is not timing out (at least not a normal timeout, maybe that
parameter got changed).

the 205 error is just info saying it is disconnecting. no real reason
given.

AV disabled or not - doesn't work. using NOD.

newsreader uses Agent or Newsleecher - neither works and gives same
205 error

this is the complete OE error message.

The host 'pop-server.nc.rr.com' could not be found. Please verify that
you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'RR_Bear Brook',
Server: 'pop-server.nc.rr.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

newsleecher sometimes shows no server message
""
sometimes
"205 Closing connection - goodbye"

Agent give
"Error reported by winsock driver. Host name not found - (Error
11004)"

all addresses are the same as the working computers.
pop-server.nc.rr.com
smtp-server.nc.rr.com
news-server.nc.rr.com

Think you're using outdated Server addresses, also some ISP's
use non-standard ports for email.
Try these instead
Inbounds server pop-server.Carolina.rr.com 24.25.4.170
Outbounds server smtp-server.Carolina.rr.com 24.25.4.90

firewall (outpost) and AV (NOD) turned off.
same issue.

Notebooks that work go thru wireless router.
desktop that does not work wired to wireless router.
bypass wireless router (connect to VOIP router) - same issue.
configuration = computer to wireless router to VOIP router to Cable
modem.

I'm sure it is a registry value - but where to look.

Thanks to all.
got some great ideas.
after backing off my reg and no change, decided it had to be in
firewall.
had shut down firewall previously, but that didn't fix it.

changed some settings and email and news came back.

was intermittent so I uninstalled and reinstalled firewall.

all seems ok now. fingers crossed.

thanks again.
