Outlook Express for Messenger Logon

I have Windows XP and am running Outlook Express and
Windows Messenger 4.7 on two different computers (one
laptop, one Desktop). I have the setting checked in
Outlook Express/Tools/Options to Automatically Log on to
Windows Messenger in both machines. On my desktop, when I
start Outlook Express, I automatically log onto Messenger
(icon in task bar has red X removed). When I do this same
thing on my laptop, messenger still won't log on. Any
ideas whats wrong?

Never mind, I found it. Apparently you have to have
View/Layout/Contacts selected in Outlook Express for
the "Auto Log On to Windows Messenger" option to work.
It's repeatable on two machines so I'm sure that is the
issue. Seems like a bug to me, but I do have an
acceptable work around by leaving the contact list
displayed.
