Outlook express folders

Why do some OE6 folders not import?

I had to do a reformat of my machine so naturally I backed up all my files
( to a second hard drive). For Outlook Express (6) I proceeded to import all
my mail folders - it asked to me point to the folder where they are, and it
proceeded to import them very cleanly. But when I looked, I noticed a few
folders were missing, even though dbx files existed. It just ignored them.
This is recent mail that were subfolders of a folder that it did correctly
import! And it took other subfolders - why not these?

I moved these dbx files to their own temp directory and ran the import
again - it would not import as it said "No messages can be found in these
folders."

I've renamed the files - no diff.

If I double click on the dbx file, it correctly launches OE6, but I still
don't see the mail from those folders.

I even tried first importing them into Outlook 2000, but they were ignored
as well.

Any ideas how to recover this mail?

I had the same problem about 8 months ago. Renaming, changing the identity,
creating the folders first in OE and trying to import them afterwards,
nothing worked. I finally recoverd my mail with DBXtract.
A nice little program, it unpacks the dbx folders to readable Emails.
If you have a lot of mail, it is handy create a new folder for extracting
the dbx files

Hope this helpes,

OK. this is good- it recovered all the individual emails in those folders -
this after all is the main think. Thank you.

I assume that as is does not reconstruct the folder, or allow you to put
them in a named folder; ie this is a manual process.....still at least it
recovered the mail. Thanks very much.

The original dbx files are still intact, so you can still try to find a way
to import them. You can download another program, OE Backup, from the site.
When you choose Full backup in this program, you can see how it works. It
makes backups for all kind of settings, like the identity and registry
settings.

It seems that only backing up the dbx files is somettimes not enough..
