Outlook Express Email Lock-Up

About a week ago I took a new job and took over the email box of the previous
assistant (including her inbox). In Outlook Express, she has an email from
2004, a mailer-daemon failure notice -- everytime I interact with the email
at all, whether to delete or move, it locks up Express so that I have to
close it through the task pane.

I'm using XP-HE, Express 6.0, and Norton Anti-Everything. I have tried
removing the preview pane, selecting the email with surrounding emails and
manipulating all of them, and turning off my Norton -- the email continues to
lock up the entire kit'n kaboodle. It has long since been removed from any
web-accessible box.

Is there a way to remove this email, perhaps manually in some fashion, so
that I can go on with my life?
