OUTLOOK EXPRESS - CAN NOT DELETE AN INCOMING MSG

E

El Cugino

My friend got an e-mail from someone with an AOL attachment. That
file is a folder in her incoming e-mail. If you try to open it, it
locks up outlook express. If you try to delete it, It hangs and hangs
for a long time. It cannot be deleted. Any Ideas on how we can get
rid of this msg from the Inbox?

Can you move it?
Try dragging the file to the Deleted Items folder. From there (if it works)
try Empty Deleted Items.

Is the offending message in the Inbox right now?

See if it will delete while working offline. File | Work Offline & View |
Layout: Uncheck the Preview Pane.

If not, move all the messages you wish to save from the Inbox to a local
folder you create. Then:

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the DBX file for the Inbox.dbx and delete it. A new,
empty one will be created automatically when you open OE.

I had the same problem and after a LOT of trying and trying (even with the
help of a computer geek) I found out that all I needed to do was hit
shift+delete and the message went away.

Thank you... This sounds like a winner. I'll try it in the
morning....

Bruce... your directions were easy to follow and I deleted the inbox.
And sure enough the file was taken care of and a new inbox was created
without the culprit file...

Tonight the lady called me and said the problem still exists and she
can't delete new e-mail in the inbox. Is there another trick you
know of? I haven't been over to check it out yet.

Thanks

She probably can't delete from other folders either, which would suggest a
corrupt Deleted Items folder.

Do it again for the Inbox.dbx, and Deleted Items.dbx. Make sure OE is closed
and of course, you have moved any messages you want to save from each
folder.

Deleted Items is probably corrupt. In the off chance that you are keeping
messages you want to save in Deleted Items, (a garbage pail), move them to a
local folder you create and then do the following.

With OE closed, find the DBX files for Deleted Items and Inbox delete them.
New ones will be created automatically when you open OE.

To avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.
