Outlook exit and relaunch problem

Outlook 2003 was installed as upgrade to Outlook 2002, for use with Exchange Server. Program runs okay, but on exit (after synchronizing automatically with the Exchange Server), the Notification Icon for Outlook remains in the System Tray. Clicking on it gives message saying Outlook is not responding. If I click on the Outlook application icon to re-launch it, the hourglass cursor appears for about 3-5 seconds then becomes an arrow cursor, and the program doesn't relaunch. I can try this several times, and same thing happens. But if I use the Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) or the MS Office Tools Application Recovery program, it shows me that there are actually multiple copies of Outlook.exe running. I can use this program to end them, one at a time, and eventually, when it gets down to only one, it relaunches

Has anybody experienced this weird problem, or have a solution for it? It is highly reproducible. The only time exiting Outlook doesn't cause this problem is when there is no activity with the exchange server

Thanks

I have got this problem on a SBS2003 server at the moment.

I have to end the task to clear it from the Sys Tray and also if I open a
copy of Outlook again without ending the previous task I get another icon in
the tray. Active Sync is not running on the server and there is no need for
Outlook to remain open for other reasons. I am have thinking that the
Antivirus is causing the problem.

Sorry, don't hnow what AcitveSync is. Was that an option in the Office 2003 installation process?

No - it's the sync utility for a PocketPC. That, and other add-ins (fax
software?) can sometimes keep outlook.exe running in the background....

Really not good to have Outlook installed on a server that runs Exchange,
for what it's worth...not recommended.

I'm using HotSync for PalmOS (Tre0 600) actually. The conduit manager that interfaces with Outlook on the PC is something called Pocket Mirror from Chapura, Inc

But the exit and relaunch problems for Outlook don't seem to relate to the presence of this utility.

But they do and Chapura has issued a fix, if what I've read in other
newsgroups is correct. See the following message in the PocketMirror FAQ:

"I have installed Outlook 11 or Outlook 2003 or Office 2003 and when I
synchronize I receive the Outlook Security Patch."

I am using ACtivesync. Mainly to sync pocket pc and I am facing this issue. I need outlook to ask / prompt for profile everytime i relaunch outlook? I believe it doesnot because it may be running in the background? How can I fix this problem?

If you are running ActiveSync and your PDA is cradled, you _are_ logged in
to Outlook and starting the Outlook application will NOT prompt for another
login.
