Outlook error message

I have Office 2007 Pro and I just dd an upgrade on Friday. Now I can't send
email from my Outlook account (I receive all mail). I spoke to support at
Cox.net and also checked my webmail account settings, and was able to send an
email to myself in my webmail account, but I get this error when I hit the
Send/Receive button in Outlook.

this is the error message:

Task '(e-mail address removed) - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook
cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider (ISP).'

I've checked all the settings in each account, some had been changed when I
updated (changed to unencrypted, but can't tell if it's really taken) all
settings now look OK

Here's my recent updates to my computer: update to .NET Framework 3.0 x86
(KB932471) 12/9/07
Def Update for Windows Defender KB15597 (Def 1.23.4526.0) 12/7/07

I need some help, so please suggest...

It could be that the outgoing SMTP server is looking for authentication from
you. When you set up your account in Outlook, did you specify your password
for the SMTP server as well as your POP3 server? Also, check your username
for the SMTP server. If you've used your entire email address try just your
username. If you've used just your username, try your entire email address.

It could also be that if you have antivirus set up to scan incoming/outgoing
mail that it's preventing you from connecting. You don't need to scan
incoming and outgoing email with your antivirus software, it won't compromise
your security. Your real time scanner should catch whatever it's updated for.

If you're using Norton or McAfee, see if they have a patch or an update for
it. If you're using their security suites, try to disable their firewall and
use the XP firewall to see if that helps.

When trying any of the above suggestions, test one at a time and then open
Outlook to see if that's the step that solves a problem.

Kathleen,

Thanks for your response. To clarify: My email has been flawless up to
this point. I have 2 email accounts off of Outlook and one hotmail account
that I have in Outlook using Connector. I can still send email from the
hotmail account. All 3 accounts receive email with no problems. I've had
2007 for 3 months, and the upgrade were the items at the bottom of the email.

I deleted one of the email accounts in Outlook and reloaded it tonight. One
thing that is happening is a popup asking for the password to be entered. I
think this happens each time that Outlook tries to send the Outgoing email.
I put the password in the password list off of one popup, but it continues
asking for the password.
