Outlook crashes constantly

I have a really weird problem. I was just trying to add a meeting to my
calendar when I got an error message :
"Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience."
So I checked the box restart Outlook and clicked on ok, but it happened
again. In fact now it happens every time I try to run Outlook.
I can start Outlook in safe mode without problems, I can access Calendar ,
Inbox , Tasks ...
Every time I try to start in normal mode I get the error message.
Tried to run scanpst - told me that it found some errors in pst file and
fixed them - didn't help.
Then I changed default pst to different one and closed the main one - didn't
help either.
Disabled all of Outlook add-ins I had installed - didn't help - then I
uninstalled them - nothing.

The only entry in Event log is this :

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Microsoft Office 11
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2000
Date: 30/10/2005
Time: 16:57:05
User: N/A
Computer: *****
Description:
Accepted Safe Mode action : Microsoft Office Outlook.

This happens immediately after I click on Outlook shortcut ( after 1
second ) then Microsoft Application Error Reporting gives the error message
and that is it. Tried to turn on logging in Outlook but the crash is so fast
that the log file is not being created before outlook fails.
I have also noticed that files like : OLKRPCLOG_10_30_2005_17_06_46_1.etl
are created in Temp folder when the crash occurs - they are binary so I have
no idea what they are.
Could someone also tell me what is the difference between safe mode and
normal mode - the only info I could find was that in safe mode there are
some disabled items - but when I click on help \ about \ Disabled Items the
list is empty ( There are no disabled items ) so I don't know what could
cause the problem.
The only thing I haven'ttried yet is Detect and repair but I wasn't sure if
Im going to lose any of my settings if I do that.

My system :
XP Home Edition Sp2
Office :
Office 2003 SP2

See if deleting outcmd.dat then trying to start outlook helps.
Detect and Repair should be ok to run.

R

Rafal Harrison-Staska

I have deleted everything from
c:\Documents and Settings\Rafal\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ - still the same
Also tried outlook /cleanfreebusy /resetfolders /CleanReminders /CleanSchedPlus - no result.
Tried reinstalling Office Sp2 - didn't help.

Tried that too - nothing helps.
The thing is it happens no more than 1 second after I try to start Outlook
so I don't think it has a chance to open pst files, or even check profile
and settings. I suspect that some files might be corrupted or something but
Detect and Repair and even reinstalling sp2 didn't work so ...
This is really annoying right now :(

Annoying that we can't isolate the problem.
You last resort might be an uninstall then reinstall (backup your PST first)
ensuring you delete the directory contents after reinstalling.

Ok some development :)
I found a folder :
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\90403E1900063D11C8EF10054038389C\11.0.5614
It had most of the files from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\
I just clicked on Outlook.exe and to my surprise Outlook started without any
problems ?????
Anyone knows what is going on ?
I suppose that maybe some files in my office installation are corrupted -
but on the other hand I run detect and repair and reinstalled Office sp2.
And this mysterious folder - what is it ? Was it created when I applied sp2
?

Not a clue what has gone on here. Numbered folders are sometimes created
during patches or installs ands are usually then deleted. I suspect that,
possibly, you had a patch installed that partially failed leaving that
directory in tact.
I'm not sure what you can do. An uninstall and reinstall might be risky with
that directory present.

I think maybe this folder is used like all others in C:\Windows\Installer to
uninstall applications or like folders in C:\Windows$NtUninstallKB....$ to
uninstall hotfixes, security updates. So it probably is a backup of all
files that were replaced during Office SP2 installation. But one thing is
not really clear for me. I installed SP2 and everything was working fine for
a week, and it just crashed after I tried to create an appointment.
???!!!???

I suspect a file has become corrupted. The time trying to locate it might
better spent on a reinstall (with directories trashed).

I think maybe this folder is used like all others in C:\Windows\Installer

to uninstall hotfixes, security updates. So it probably is a backup of all
files that were replaced during Office SP2 installation. But one thing is
not really clear for me. I installed SP2 and everything was working fine
for a week, and it just crashed after I tried to create an appointment.

Not a clue what has gone on here. Numbered folders are sometimes created
during patches or installs ands are usually then deleted. I suspect that,
possibly, you had a patch installed that partially failed leaving that
directory in tact.
I'm not sure what you can do. An uninstall and reinstall might be risky
with that directory present.

Ok some development :)
I found a folder :
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\90403E1900063D11C8EF10054038389C\11.0.5614
It had most of the files from C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\
I just clicked on Outlook.exe and to my surprise Outlook started without
any problems ?????
Anyone knows what is going on ?
I suppose that maybe some files in my office installation are
corrupted - but on the other hand I run detect and repair and
reinstalled Office sp2.
And this mysterious folder - what is it ? Was it created when I applied
sp2 ?

Annoying that we can't isolate the problem.
You last resort might be an uninstall then reinstall (backup your PST
first) ensuring you delete the directory contents after reinstalling.

Tried that too - nothing helps.
The thing is it happens no more than 1 second after I try to start
Outlook so I don't think it has a chance to open pst files, or even
check profile and settings. I suspect that some files might be
corrupted or something but Detect and Repair and even reinstalling sp2
didn't work so ...
This is really annoying right now :(

||| |||| I have a really weird problem. I was just trying to add a
meeting
|||| to my calendar when I got an error message :
|||| "Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to
|||| close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
|||| So I checked the box restart Outlook and clicked on ok, but it
|||| happened again. In fact now it happens every time I try to run
|||| Outlook.
|||| I can start Outlook in safe mode without problems, I can access
|||| Calendar ,
|||| Inbox , Tasks ...
|||| Every time I try to start in normal mode I get the error
message.
|||| Tried to run scanpst - told me that it found some errors in pst
|||| file and fixed them - didn't help.
|||| Then I changed default pst to different one and closed the main
|||| one - didn't help either.
|||| Disabled all of Outlook add-ins I had installed - didn't help -
|||| then I uninstalled them - nothing.
||||

||||

Outlook
|||| but the crash
|||| is so fast that the log file is not being created before outlook

Ok it works now - but I have no idea what was ( or is ) wrong with it. First
copied 3 files: outllib.dll, mos.dll and outlook.exe from

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\90403E1900063D11C8EF10054038389C\11.0.5614
to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\

and now Outlook works. I remember I read somewhere before that people had
problems with outllib.dll after installing Office Sp2 so maybe this is the
problem with this file. Still not sure if this won't mess up something else.
Unfortunatelly I am still not able to create appointments in calendar -
Outlook crashes immediately when I click on save appointment :( - no idea
what is going on here - will try with filemonitor to check what file outlook
is trying to access just before it crashes.
