Outlook Contacts Importing Error: 1 Record per field

I am having trouble importing from an excel spreadsheet into my Outlook contacts folder. After I setup the import and map the fields, Outlook imports each field's value in as a separate record i.e. 1000 records imported = 1000 contacts with only the name, 1000 contacts with only the first line of the address, 1000 records with only the City, you get the picture. I got the spreadsheet from a freind who was having the same problem. I have even tried exporting from Excel into a CSV file then importing it into Outlook and get the same result. I am using Outlook 2003 SP1. Any help would be greatly appreciated
