Outlook 2007 won't receive email

I'm using Outlook 2007 with Win 7. Suddenly after installing numerous Windows updates I receive this message: "reported error (0x8004210C) : 'Some messages you marked for download are no longer available on the server." Initially I thought it was simply that some larger messages I finally tried to download were in fact no longer available as I did receive smaller messages. But then it has impacted all mail. I tried switching to "Download headers only" and was able to receive those, but then could not go back to receive the message. I have verified that all the settings are correct. Any suggestions what to try next?
