Outlook 2007 PST errors

A splash screen comes up saying there are errors on the pst file, run
scanpst, from searching for it as I can't get past the splash screen but it
finds no errors?
When I go back into outlook the same splash screen comes up?
"Cannot open default email folder.... Errors have been detected in file.
Quite Outlook and all mail enabled applications then use Scanpst" which is
what I have done.
It does state quit all mail enabled applications what exactly does this mean
as I obviously have to do so as I cannot actually get into the Outlook screen!
In the Data file within the Mail folder I am unable to remove the Data file
as it is the default but it does not tell me how to create a new one.
I am at a loss I cannot actually get into the program to run a backup for
another disk, assuming it will work.
Anyone any ideas please.............

The message to close all mail enabled applications means don't start
anything that could cause Outlook to start in a hidden way. (Which you would
bring up the task manager to verify that outlook.exe is not in the process
list before using scanpst.exe to check/verify/repair your PST file(s).)

If the Inbox Repair tool reports a clean bill of health for your PST file(s)
and you still can't get Outlook to start, will Outlook start in safe mode?

How to:
Select Start > Run
Type: outlook.exe /safe
OK button

If you have any problem with pst file, you can try a tool called
Advanced Outlook Repair. You can download a free demo version at
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe . I think it is a useful repair
tool for you. It is easy to recover your PST file by using its wizard.
It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects
from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files.
