Outlook 2007 does not assign category to received mail

I have set a rule "assign a category to any mail from a particular sender or
mailing list" in the Rules and Alerts tool. It does not seem to work. The
only way so far was to apply the rule manualy after the mail´s arrival. Is
there any help, please? Thank you.

Verify that you don't have another rule that strips the categories again.
"Clear categories on mail (recommended)" is a default Outlook 2007 rule.
