Outlook 2007 and IMAP messages

I've searched through the posts and didn't find anybody having similar
problems. With XP/SP2 and Outlook 2007 ( 12.0.4518.1014 ) MSO
(12.0.4518.1014), I stop getting new mail in my IMAP account. I've deleted
and re added the account with no problems and have been able to retrieve all
my mail and new messages. However, after a time(not sure when it stops),
Outlook no longer gets new mail (and the send recieve shows successful). I
can check the account via other apps (like thunderbird and OLE and web) with
the exact same settings and see all new mail coming in. I've disabled email
AV scans etc.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have an update.... I haven't changed anything and it worked for a day. Now
it back to nothing. Hmm..

I have the exact same problem. I haven't been able to view any new
IMAP mail in Outlook 2007 for a week, but in Outlook Express and
webmail I can get all new messages.

Outlook tells me I have new IMAP messages with the unread count on the
folder list, but when I click the IMAP Inbox, it clears and does not
show any messages.

This happens on and off every few weeks.

The only reason I use Outlook now is because my work uses it for
Exchange, which works great. But the lack of consistent IMAP support
is really starting to grate and I can't find any explanations for why
this happens anywhere. If I didn't have Exchange at work, I'd be using
something else like Thunderbird or Eudora, or switch to a Mac.

Why is IMAP broken?

Yep, it's still happening. Like you said, it's pretty sporadic - i.e. works
for a week or so, then just stops getting new mail for a few days .. weird.

Can somebody please help? It's pretty serious when you can rely on the mail
client to actually retreive the mail when you know the mail is there.

I am convinced that Microsoft doesn't give a crap about the IMAP/POP
support. I've had problems with IMAP since at least Outlook 2003, and
while they slowly add IMAP features like Sent Items folder support,
the actual reliability is getting worse.

Yet Outlook Express doesn't ever seem to have this problem, along with
Windows Mail in Vista.

If it's not an Exchange account, it really doesn't matter to
Microsoft. Sorry to be harsh, but I'm just about done.

I don't think Outlook has ever done an excellent job handling IMAP accounts.

Will Outlook ever support IMAP reliably? Or should I go on to another
mail program?

Many think Thunderbird handles IMAP rather well.

Maybe this could help...

I found this in the Technet forums, I'll copy-paste it as is...

Some users reported this fix to work correctly.

Hello,

We have the fix for you.

Part of the issue comes from upgrading from Outlook 2003 or earlier because
Outlook 2007 uses your account settings to create new ones for you. When you
upgrade to 2007 you will need to locate four .DAT files and rename them...

STEP 1: Turn off Outlook 2007 and Locate these files

For some reason, during the upgrade these four files can become corrupted -
the migration from 2003 to 2007 isn't the smoothest but not having to create
all your POP3 accounts again is excellent.

1. extend.dat - you will find this file in the location | Drive
Lettter:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat //change it to extend.old

2. views.dat - may not find it most of the time

3. frmcache.dat - Drive Letter:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\FORMS\FRMCACHE.DAT //change it to
FRMCACHE.old

4. outcmd.dat - C:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat //change it to OUTCMD.old

STEP 2: Restart Outlook 2007

1. Send yourself some test emails and watch the messages appear.

We contacted Microsoft Office 2007 support and workshopped this fix with
them. They did not hear of this problem until we made first contact.
Together, with the help of their support team (merv m. specifically), we
found this simple solution above in a matter of 40 minutes. I was very
impressed with their willingness to work through a fix together.

As of today, they do not have plans to create a patch for this small bug but
they are gathering bug fixes for a future service pack down the road. Right
now (MS said) their focus is building a service pack for VISTA's bugs.

Good luck everyone!
