Outlook 2003 without Outlook Express installed?

Problem with a new XP Pro install. Upgraded to IE7, then installed Office
2003. I can not get a new pop mail account to work in Outlook '03. In earlier
versions of Outlook (98 & 2000), Outlook Express needed to be installed, I
believe there was some dependency. Is that still the case? Any ideas to fix
this if there is still a dependency. (MS still hasn't fixed this?)

There is nothing to fix as there is no such dependency and even if Windows
XP comes with OE installed.

What is your issue?

Hi, Roady.

Clean install of XP Pro and Office 2003. Can not get Outlook to connect to
bellsouth.net pop and smtp for sending and receiving mail. Setup exactly like
the account in machine it is replacing. I can ping the mail server
(mail.bellsouth.net) I did reinstall Outlook, deleted the e-mail account,
still no connection. I know there is a long list of possible causes, but what
is the most probable?

Thanks!!

Go to a command prompt and type:

telnet mail.bellsouth.net 110

and hit Enter.

Can you connect to the server? If you do you'll get a banner with "+OK POP3
server ready."

If you cannot establish a connection then something either on your PC or on
your local network/ISP is preventing you from accessing the server on port
110 (the POP3 port). Disable any antivirus software and try again.

If you can establish a connection from the telnet prompt but not from within
Outlook, verify that port 110 is specified in your mail server options (and
it should be port 25 by default for SMTP).

What is the exact error you get when you try?
Have you already applied Office 2003 SP2 and additional updates?
