Outlook 2003 will not send a specific message

Is there any way to debug this phenomenon? My office 2003 professional
Outlook gets certain messages stuch in the outbox and they just will not
send. I see no error messages. I can send other messages, but for some
reason I can not phathom certain messages get stuck.

I am not sure what the common thread is.
Some are replies, in which I add a few recipients.

I tend to use the BCC field because I don't want everyone to see to whom
else the message went.

I also often edit the message in word for it's message writing tools then
copy the document into a message body.

I am not sure if there is a log file that might tell me, but I doubt that it
ever gets to the remote SMTP server. I use verizon.net as my SMTP relay
servers.

I get no error messages. The message simply stays in the outbox for ever.
Sometimes even deleteing the message and recreating part of it does not
work. Sometimes it does.

I need help in debugging this bad behavior on Outlook's part.

Anything you can tell me would be useful. I just ran the Office update:
Office2003SP1-kb842532-fullfile-enu.exe thinking that might help, but the
behavior still exists.

see if maybe you have some PST corruption by running scanpst.exe on your pst
file.

I have a similar problem, but the problem occurs whenever I look in the
Outbox before a message is sent out. If I do this I end up having to drag
the message to the Draft folder, open it up, and click Send (doing this from
within the Outbox has no effect). While I obviously can avoid this by not
viewing the Outbox while it has items in it, this seems like rather strange
behavior.

Well, I tried both suggestions.
First I ran the scanpst.exe against all my pst files... I have three. All
three had errors that I repaired. Then I tried to send. It still did not
work.

Then I followed the second suggestion, which I think I did before, which was
to move it to draft and to resend. This time it went. I still have no
idea why this is happening and would like a better explanation, if anybody
from Microsoft is listening. I am not sure if I can reproduce it.

On occasion, Microsoft people do visit here, but it's not an official

apparently inconsistent behaviour. Basically, it seems that messages
go OK if they are closely followed by another one (I haven't
determined exactly what closely means in this context, but there is
time to type a quick test message), but if not they stick in the
Outbox. Stuck messages, even when resent by opening and sending them,
never then go unless they are first moved to another folder, then
resent, and chased up with another message.

I have checked the PST file; errors were reported and corrected, but
the problem did not go away. When checked again when the problem
re-appeared the PST file needed to be repaired again. I have just
tried again after repairing the PST file, and the problem still seems
to occur with a message that was created before the repair. A new
message went while the stuck message was there, but when I deleted the
stuck message, the next message stuck.

Trying to send a stuck message does not create anything in the LOG
file, so the error is 'inside' Outlook, and therefore unlikely to be
anything to do with the network.

Any suggestions?

what is leading to your PST corruption is possibly what needs attention. Are
you fully closing Outlook before you close down the machine?
When a message gets stuck like this it is often damaged in some way.
Scanpst.exe is good but we also advise to regularly defrag a hard drive and
to alternate between defragging and running scanpst.

A new profile with a clean PST and you old items copied over or imported
might be called for.

was it an upgrade of an existing Outlook installation? If an upgrade, could
you try creating a new profile (as Bill suggests - see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918) and see if
that solves the problem? Please post back with any information.

files from backup. I didn't do this in a very controlled way, in that
I copied files from some directories (open the backup PST file, and
drag and drop), and I imported some. I don't know if this will make a

claimed not to need defragging). I'll try tonight if I remember.

Win xp (sp2) Outlook 2003 - part of the office 2003 setup:
I have a similar problem in that I can send an email without an attachment
but as soon as I attach a word document (169kb) it gets stuck in the outbox.
Moving it to another folder or draft box makes no difference. Sending it
without previewing the outbox makes no difference either. The email can be
sent easily with outlook express.

then created a new one (all with Outlook shut down), and the problem
is still there.

When you created the new profile, did you use the same PST files, or did you
start fresh?

Could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment) after this happens? It
great if the log were for a period in which you sent a message that didn't
go anywhere but did get sent after you sent another message.

Can't PCs be frustrating! I deleted the log file to remove all of the
old stuff (I have had it on for a few days), then tried resending two
messages, both of which had previously been stuck. They both went, and
now nothing seems to be sticking! I'll repost to this thread when/if
the problem recurs.

To answer your question, I used the same PST files (though they had
recently been regenerated).

great if the log were for a period in which you sent a message that
didn't
go anywhere but did get sent after you sent another message.

Jeff - I don't recall if it was an upgrade or a new install (is
there
any simple way of telling?). I have certainly copied old messages
back
into the new system, some from old-style PST files.

I have tried various things to get rid of the problem (short of a
complete reformat), including

1. Unistall and re-install Outlook 2003.

2. Copy all PST files to backup, create new PST file (make sure its
the new format - one factor may be that I tend to have very large
PST
file sizes, and the 2 Gb limit is a possible issue), copy/import
old
files from backup. I didn't do this in a very controlled way, in
that
I copied files from some directories (open the backup PST file, and
drag and drop), and I imported some. I don't know if this will make
a
difference?

3. ScanPST

I haven't defragged for a long time (I seem to remember that NTFS
was
claimed not to need defragging). I'll try tonight if I remember.

what is leading to your PST corruption is possibly what needs
attention.
Are
you fully closing Outlook before you close down the machine?
When a message gets stuck like this it is often damaged in some way.
Scanpst.exe is good but we also advise to regularly defrag a
hard
drive
and
to alternate between defragging and running scanpst.

A new profile with a clean PST and you old items copied over or imported
might be called for.

I have a similar problem, and have found some consistency in
the
apparently inconsistent behaviour. Basically, it seems that messages
go OK if they are closely followed by another one (I haven't
determined exactly what closely means in this context, but
there is
time to type a quick test message), but if not they stick in
the
Outbox. Stuck messages, even when resent by opening and
sending them,
never then go unless they are first moved to another folder, then
resent, and chased up with another message.

I have checked the PST file; errors were reported and
corrected, but
the problem did not go away. When checked again when the
problem
re-appeared the PST file needed to be repaired again. I have just
tried again after repairing the PST file, and the problem
still seems
to occur with a message that was created before the repair. A new
message went while the stuck message was there, but when I deleted
the
stuck message, the next message stuck.

Trying to send a stuck message does not create anything in
the LOG
file, so the error is 'inside' Outlook, and therefore
unlikely to be
anything to do with the network.

Any suggestions?

Well, I tried both suggestions.
First I ran the scanpst.exe against all my pst files... I
have three.
All
three had errors that I repaired. Then I tried to send. It still
did
not
work.

Then I followed the second suggestion, which I think I did before,
which
was
to move it to draft and to resend. This time it went. I still
have
no
idea why this is happening and would like a better
explanation, if
anybody
from Microsoft is listening. I am not sure if I can
reproduce it.

Is there any way to debug this phenomenon? My office 2003 professional

It has finally happened again - a message has stuck in the outbox. I
exited Outlook, deleted the old log file, then restarted Outlook and
tried to send the stuck message. No new log file was created. A log
was created when Outlook scanned the inbox, but all the entries
related to the pop server, there was nothing about the smtp server.

I tried moving the message to another folder, then sending it - still
nothing about smtp in the log file.

Copied both messages to another folder, send first the initial
message, then the test message - first message went (smtp activity in
log file) second message didn't.

Further information - ran scanpst.exe on the outlook file, 31 errors
found and fixed, then stuck message sent OK. Errors possibly
associated with import of old messages?
