Outlook 2003 will not receive

I am trying to run Outlook 2003 (just upgraded Office XP to 2003) on
Windows XP Pro. The "Test Account Settings" button connects to SMTP
and POP servers and finds no problems, Outlook sends mail OK, but will
not receive. I am trying to connect through a LAN via ADSL. I have
turned of my Firewall and Virus scanner.

On all 4 of the POP accounts from which the previous version of
Outlook was receiving I now get a message of the form:
"Task 'F2S - Receiving' reported error (0x800408FC) : 'The server name
you entered can not be found on the network... "

Forte Agent and Arrow are both still collecting mail from the same
servers, so the error message is clearly not quite true although
Outlook seems unable to find them.

Has anyone got any ideas for me, please?

Hello Kam,
if you did an upgrade, please verify if the logon
information is transferred correctly. We had simelar
problems with other MS applications and due to the error
we got the information that the server was not reacable,
but the real truth was that the server refusted the access
due to wrong login information.
regards
Bernhard

Yes, the login information did transfer correctly. It had to in order
for sending via SMTP to work. However, I tried setting it up again
just in case.

Can you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file after you get these errors?

Jeff,

First I deinstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 and created a new
computer account. Then using the new computer account I ran Outlook,
created 1 e-mail account, and turned on the diagnostic logging. Then
tried send/receive a few times. It worked the very first time, but
never again after that. Here is the log:

That error indicates that Outlook was unable to get the Internet address (IP
address) for the server name you entered. Check the server name you entered
to make sure it's correct. If it is correct, you may be having Domain Name
Service (DNS) problems.

I am positive the servers names I am using are correct. Outlook only
failed on them after upgrading to Office 2003. The DNS is also OK as
other email clients still work with the same server names. (The server
name in the log I posted is not valid as I edited that before posting
it for the world to see.)

The same addresses still work OK with Outlook 2002. Also, when I set
up a new user account for testing with a new PST file and just used
one of my 4 e-mail accounts it worked the first time and then failed
every time subsequently. The 2nd attempt being only 20 seconds after
the first successful retrieval.

Looks like I may have to stick with Office 2002 until I can manage to
try a clean install of XP and Office 2003. :(

Thanks for your input.

What happens if you add the servername and its IP address to the your
"hosts" file (which should be in your \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
directory)? By the way, I'm going to be out of town for the next several
weeks, and so probably won't be able to respond to any reply...

That made no difference, neither did putting the actual IP address in
for the server address in the e-mail address setup.

Decide to take the plunge and do a clean install of XP and Office
2003. As suspected, that sorted out my problem. Thank goodness for the
ability to multi-boot!
