Outlook 2003 unstable in Windows 7 x64

E

EHS

I installed Office 2003 on brand new Windows 7 x64 a few eeks ago.
No problems installing, no problems transferring all data from old system,
never any problem opening Outlook, or any other office apps.
Everything (Windows, Office ) at the latest update SP and release.
Outlook regulary stops working, and restarts. Quite often when starting a
new email.
I have removed all add ins.
Often Outlook will also not close - when using the "X" at the top Right hand
corner. When this happens it can only be closed using file exit.
Never ever had any of these issues when running on XP

Windows 7 is still in beta and you are being used as a guinea pig. Wait
until SP1 comes out and everything will work properly. My main system is
still XP Professional SP3 and no updates since SP3 was released.

Have about 4 - all pop3 - all linked to external - internet server based ISPs

No pattern except that it allways seems to happen when I am movbing fast -
multi tasking - have other software running, Outlook task running clock timer
running - composing an email and go to hit he save button or open another
email to retrieve some datad and bang - crash. "MS Outlook has stopped
working...." (It may be that it is send retrieving in the background - have
not noticed.

I have just raun SCANPST (which also hung the first time I tried to run
it..) It found errors in the OUTLOOK.PST file and repaired them. Do I need to
run it on the archived files as well?

How frequently are you checking for new mail? Are all 4 accounts on the same
server? If so, split them into 2 send/receive groups and do not check mail
more often than every 8 - 10 minutes.

Do you have all updates installed for office?

No offence but facts based on what?

Fact is that a lot of researchers and analysts already recommend deployment
of Windows 7 and urge corporations not to wait for SP1.
Fact is that the SP1 update for Windows 7 has been announced as to be only a
"small" collection of "minor" fixes.
Fact is that you also cannot possibly know that whatever EHS issue is with
Outlook 2003 on Windows 7 will be fixed in SP1 for Windows 7.
Fact is that Outlook 2003 runs stable for millions on Windows 7.
Fact is that an Outlook 2003 configuration on Windows XP can also get
damaged.

The fact that it works or doesn't work for you, doesn't mean that it will
apply to anyone; it's a personal experience for you and not a generic fact.

Your reply to EHS does not solve the current issue he is having, nor did you
make any attempt to further analyze his current issue or get more
information about his situation. Wouldn't that be similar to a shot in the
dark and thus not very helpful to anyone?

So my question to you is;
Based on which facts in EHS post, made you say that apparently his only way
to solve this issue was to wait for SP1 for Windows 7 and to downgrade to
Windows XP SP3 for the time being?

Run scanpst.exe a couple more times against any of your pst-files until it
doesn't pop-up any errors anymore.
Then start Outlook in Safe Mode and work with Outlook like that for a day
and see if still crashes. This will give more insights in the scope of your
issue.

To start Outlook in Safe Mode use;
Start-> type; outlook.exe /safe
(note the space in the command)

Well...nothing definitive....
I ran , and run Scanpst until no errors.
Ran for a few days in safe mode - wher it seems to be a little more stable
but still crashes sometimes.

Generaally I am back to running in regular mode and sufferring the crashes.
After most crashes the scanpst finds errors. Often the scanpst itself
freezes after pressing BACKUP and YES to replace previous Backup file.. WHen
restarting SCAN PST immediately after it crashes / freezes it says no errors
were found.

I am so desperate I am considering buying 2007 with included update to 2010
in the hope that this will solve the problem
