Outlook 2003 shuts down when I try to use Gmail

MS Outlook 2003 goes into a loop where is shuts down and tries to come back
on and then shuts down etc. when I try to send or receive any Gmail. It does
not matter whether I use POP or IMAP. I have deleated and installed these
accounts at least 7 times each. I have also noted that MS Outlook will not
allow me to set up "Rules and Alerts" under the Tools tab. After MS Outlook
shuts down, I must go back and reload Outlook or it will not work. I am
currently using the POP settings for Gmail on Outlook Express on this
computer and also POP settings on Entourage on my Macintosh. The POP
Troubleshooter tool goes through several steps and concludes that everything
is OK with Google. What is happening here and what do I need to read my
Gmail?

Try deleting and recreating the mail account (control panel->mail icon->accounts) if this does not work then try a new mail profile (same place except the profiles option)
