Outlook 2003 process hangs in Task Manager

Here is an interesting problem that I need help with.

We have a client with Windows XP and Office 2003.

The office suite programs launch OK but Outlook

has a problem once it launches and appears to close

then it cannot be re-opened. Under the processes list in task manager

OUTLOOK.EXE does not close itself as it should and each subsequent

attempt to open it launches a new occurrence of OUTLOOK.EXE.

When I end the processes then Outlook launches fine again.

The problem repeats for another user logged on a different account

so it is something in the PC that is messing us up and not her profile.

We ran an Office 2003 Office Repair.

We ran an Outlook 2003 Detect and Repair.

Neither helped.

What is causing the process not to close?

If only we knew the answer! There is another thread dealing with Outlook
failing to end elsewhere in this NG. Personally, I've posed the question at
least three times in three separate threads and still no Microsoft reply.
The main difference between your scenario and mine is I've tracked mine to
sending e-mail. If I send an e-mail, Outlook never closes even though it
disappears from view. If you go into Task manager, it is still running. This
problem exists on two separate computers in my home / office network.

I presume you've already ruled out the usual suspects: virus, rouge code and
parasites. I've run three independent virus scans and two parasite search
programs and the systems in question are all clean. I strongly suspect it is
a Microsoft Security patch gone awry, as I did not always have the problem.
Officially, Microsoft is not responding tot the problem. I'm running Win2K
and Office 2K, but the symptoms sound very similar.
