Outlook 2003 password pop up problem

Outlook 2003 trying to set up a POP3 account. Know all about the password
problem and Microsoft KB Article 290684. I have run into this password
problem on 1 in 5 machines and successfully sorted the problem following the
usual registry deletion of the Protected Storage System Provider key on about
a dozen machines so far.

I have one Sony VAIO laptop with Windows XP Home Service Pack 2 with all
critical updates and a fully updated MS Office 2003 Student Teacher version
that nothing works to resolve the password pop up problem. Have deleted
Protected Storage System Provider key, and verified that it has been
successfully deleted many times, deleted and added a single e-mail account
many times, found a stray Outlook Express e-mail account that I deleted. Run
a Registry cleaner, rebooted machine many times. Tried many, many attempts at
configuring the e-mail and still nothing works.

I have searched on line and so far I have not run across anything more
elaborate than the MS KB Article 290684.

At this point I am willing to accept any ideas, suggestions, comments,
criticism. I have had success in the past, so I think?? I know what I am
doing, but this machine is not cooperating in any way.

Have you tried completely removing TCP/IP from the PC and reinstalling it?

With Windows XP their isn't an easy way to remove TCP/IP and as the OP is
using a laptop then it could well be that the NIC is onboard which rules out
removing the NIC.

Seems I have found the problem!

I was setting up a specific G-mail account with POP3. Appearently it appears
that G-mail may have had some issues with SMTP working correctly on some
e-mail accounts over the last few weeks.

After a lot of frustraion, I finally configure a know good G-mail account in
the problem machine and it worked without any problem. I had originally set
up 4 G-mail accounts to use on this machine and it appears that the first 2 I
tried to configure had problems, but 2 did not and I unfortunately tried the
2 that did not work first. Then I configured the problem email accounts in my
machine with Outlook 2002 at home and it did not work on Saturday. On Sunday
I finally tried on my machine at home again and the accounts worked!!

Lesson learned with Outlook and password/conneciton issues - Try a known
good account if you get the Password Pop up problem before you start pulling
your hair out!!
