Outlook 2003 over VPN

B

Bill

I am trying to get VPN access to an Exchange 2000 server,
with Outlook 2003 through a cable modem running on XP
Professional. Access to the VPN works, I can even set up
the client and "check the name" with no problem. But,
after loading Outlook 2003 I don't see any emails.
Normally when I would connect a machine through the VPN
(using earlier versions of outlook) I would see the users
mailbox by default.

Does anyone have any idea why I cannot see the mail in the
exchange mail box?

Are there settings, that by default, act like an account
that needs to "send/recieve"?

When I click on send/receive an hourglass shows up and the
progress bar show up to 60% and then seems to hang (after
about 10 minuites I usually do a ctrl alt delete it -
shows outlook 2003 not responding).

It appears to be something in outlook. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

I would check with my Exchange Admin at work to see what you are missing.
They probably have the best available information.

I am the Exchange Admin and do not know the answer, that
is why I posted the message.

Thanks for the reply but I was hoping for a little bit
more.

Ah, that tiny, but essential piece of information was missing, hence my
response.

If these are upgrades, I find that creating a new profile *fixes* 95% of the
problems that seem to appear from nowhere.

Good chance your packets are fragmented causing outlook to hang up.

Ping the mail server & set the "dont fragment" flag. Then change the
size of the ICMP packet starting at 1490 and climbing down until you
no longer get "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set" or request
timed out.

Once you find the sweet spot (probably around 1410 or so if history
shows me anything)...change the MTU on the client machine interface to
the packet size that was successful.

We've had many issues with Outlook XP & 2000 over VPN where this
resolved it.
