Outlook 2003 keeps trying to "save as" and won't let me compose em

I have Outlook 2003 and for the past 3 weeks or so, it has been doing this
quirky thing of popping up a dialog box that wants me to save-as, either as a
text file, or a doc file. If I click cancel, the window just keeps popping
up endlessly. The only way then to exit the program is by Windows Task
Manager. It is sometimes intermittent, sometimes endless loop. I have
scanned for viruses, scanned for trojans, adware, spyware, even removed and
re-installed outlook, but nothing fixes it. IE8 was doing the same thing
until I switched to Firefox, which is much more stable. Seems to be a
problem only with MS programs. Even Excel was doing it for awhile, trying to
save-as endlessly, not allowing me to do anything. Is it a hard drive
problem? It is driving me nuts, almost to the point of buying a new
computer, and my Gateway is only like 2 years old. Thank you for any help
you can give.
