Outlook 2003 hangs when I click "send" after writing an email

Problem - I write an email, then click "send" in the upper left of the email,
and Outlook hangs for 60 seconds before the email shows up in my outbox and I
can do other things in Outlook.

I'm running Outlook 2003 and XP. This is a new computer. I've tried
reloading MS Office but that didn't solve it. I have turned off
"automatically send and receive emails when starting Outlook" in Tools /
Options / Mail Setup, and I do not have any automatic send/receives - I only
do that "manually." (I prefer it that way). I had thought the delay was
caused by it doing a send/receive the email as soon as I clicked "send," but
that wasn't the problem - it takes 60 seconds for it to show up in my outbox.

After loading Outlook, I downloaded a free virus check package - I thought
the conflict might be there. So I uninstalled that package, and reinstalled
Outlook. That doesn't seem to have solved the problem. I didn't have this
problem on my old machine. Settings for the email account are the same as on
my old computer.

Suggestions?

do you have any add-ins installed that might be interfering with the send
process?
Antivirus you mentioned. If any antivirus is installed and has email
integration enabled then disable that integration.
What type of email account do you use?
