OUtlook 2003 hangs on a junk mail

Outlook 2003 has been hanging or crashing recently while downloading e-mail
on multiple computers. The systems are all fully updated with patches,
running on XP Pro, and using POP3 to downlad mail.
It appears that a certain junk-email is hanging the system. When it reaches
some point in the download process, the Outlook hangs. As a work-around, I go
into the mainframe web client, and delete all junk mail. When I return to
Outlook, it works properly.

Any insights woud be helpful.

Unless you can filter out the bad messages on the server side, I don't know
of much else that can be done.
