Outlook 2003 does not automatically send receive

I have Office 2003 pro on a machine running Win XP pro. Outlook 2003 does
not automatically send and receive on connect nor every 5 min as set. It
does send and receive on clicking send and receive all or pressing on F9.
The box in Tools -> Options -> Mail Setup -> Send/Receive is checked.
Firewalls (Windows and Antivirus) are disabled. The computer talks to my
other computers and to the Internet via D-Link router with a firewall.

Any suggestions? Have already spend hours trying to fix it.

Do you have an automated polling interval set? You might want to up your
interval from 5 to 10 minutes, especially if you have more than one mail
account your are checking.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Jan asked:

Are you in Online mode? Make sure File>Work Offline is not checked.

The OP said:

So, apparently, the send/receive interval is set to 5 minutes.

Thanks Milly,

I have changed it from 5 to 10 min, no change. However, I think I know what
the problem is:

I am running new TrendMicro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005. Disabling
scanning of incoming mail solved the problem. I will contact the vendor as
it could be a bug in their brand new edition of the otherwise very good
security package.
