Outlook 2003 demands Outlook Express 4.01 or greater

Hi,
I installed Outlook 2003 on my laptop to manage my smartphone contacts
whose synchronization prog ActiveSync needs Outlook to run. After
starting Outlook an error message told me that I require Outlook Express
4.01 or greater. I can install it by running IE5Setup which I did. A
second error message popped up telling that Setup has detected a more
recent version of Internet Explorer already running on the pc - I use
the current IE version - and stopped the installation.

I installed OE 6 but the same error messages appear.

I have to use this Outlook version as I don't have a more recent one.
So, what can I do ? Uninstall IE 7 (if this is possible ?), and then
install Outlook Express 6 or higher ?

TIA

Thanks for the hint. This is the first time that I manipulate the
registry so I am somewhat hesitant. In fact, from my understanding the
website says something different from what I find at the indicated
place, to my surprise.

First surprise: the kb entries do not concern OE 4.01 & Win XP.

Either they concern preceding versions of Windows , in this case they
treat the OE 4.01 absence error. Or they concern Win XP but inform how
to repair IE.

But I use Win XP & Outlook 2002 and need to use OE 4.01 (or trick Win XP
to believe that I installed OE).

Second surprise :

The website says:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}]

"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001

Changed IsInstalled to 1 from 0

I understand that I should change the values for "IsInstalled" to 1.

But what I find is the following:
http://www.cijoint.fr/cjlink.php?file=cj200901/cijyNbyDUq.bmp

There is no IsInstalled value.
