Outlook 2003 Contacts export problem

J

I am trying to export my Outlook contacts but when I click on the Export
option nothing happens - no errors, no movement, etc. I can leave the
Import/Export window open for hours but the process will go no further to
allow me to select what format I want to export to, etc. Thanks for any help.

Short answer - first step would be to run the Office Diags to correct any
potential configuration issues - the most likely cause of whatever the
problem is.

If the problem still persists - would suggest being more specific because
your description is a tad contradictory making it unclear as to "exactly"
where in the process you've run into a problem:

#1) You said: "..............................but when I click on the Export
option nothing happens...."
#2) Followed by: " I can leave the Import/Export window open for hours but
the process will go no further to allow me to select what format I want to
export to"

May all be perfectly obvious to you as to what is being referenced but it's
only an "educated guess" for anyone else reading the description. No one
else can see exactly what is happening in terms of "click on the Export
option nothing happens" (...which Export option?) - apparently something did
happen because you also referred to "Import/Export Window open..." in item
#2 (...which window specifically in the process along with anything else
that may have been highlighted/clicked?)

The "educated guess" I'm making here is that you:
#1 - Clicked on Import/Export from File Menu (opens first Import/Export
Wizard window)
#2 - Highlighted "Export to file" and then clicked on <Next> - subsequent
"Export to a File" window does not appear
*** that's a configuration problem - back to <short answer> above

I think I had the same problem (see 4.13 above). I followed all steps to
import addresses, got to "finish" but the address book in outlook remained
blank. Is that th configuration problem you speak of? thanks

This is not referrning to Outlook Express which I assume you are referring
to given your other post with Gordon. This is an entirely different issue
and there is little anyone can provide you without some semblance of knowing
what you are doing as Gordon has requested several times.

As for the specific problem originally addressed in this message thread - no
additional has been provided so any additional response is pure speculation
and a waste of time for all concerned especially since no one knows if the
problem got resolved or not by following the steps originally suggested.

The rest of this really belongs in the original thread related to your OE
issue (to which Gordon is replying to) so please respond there with any
additional info:

#1 - There are many webpages on the microsoft site and the URL you provided
showed as being invalid (MS web pages do not start with
<microsoft.com/.....> and what you pasted in
<microsoft.com/outlook/HA010943871003.aspx> comes up as an invalid page with
or without the leading http://
#2 - Importing from OE in Outlook requires entering the correct OE account -
a multitude of steps you have not listed as being done nor have you
identified if your OE install has mutliple accounts etc
#3 - Outlook does import to an AddressBook - it imports to a contact folder
which needs to be added to the AddressBook but your previous messages state
that 0 records were imported which indicates that a) you don't have any
contacts in OE or b) you're using the wrong OE account - hence potential of
no contacts.

In any case, without specific info as to what you are referring to AND have
specifically done - any solutions as to cause would be nothing more than
"lucky guesses" (<general> descriptions do NOT suffice nor are people going
to spend hours trying to figure out what steps exactly you're following). Am
sure if you provide Gordon with the info he has requested - he will be able
to provide some answers (and/or others may also be inclined to chime in
offer ideas if there is remotely enough info to comment on).

Lest you think this response reply is harsh (not intended) - just think how
frustrated both parties would be with the following exchange (far too many
people take far too much for granted in explanations (or lack thereof) when
requesting trouble-shooting assistance).

Problem: "I ran into a problem following all the steps listed on the page
that relates to this in the manual . It doesn't work - why isn't the program
working?
Reply: "Follow the steps found on the page in the manual that has the answer
to your question - it will all work."

Sorry it took so long to get back with a reply but the link wasn't working to
get here directly so I had to find my original post.

In Outlook 2003 I click on File then select Import/Export and I get no
response from the program. I get nothing past Import/Export I can leave it
at that point for 24 hours and nothing happens. The program doesn't appear
to be locked since I can press <ESC> and Outlook still runs OK. I sync my
Outlook to my Palm so I synched the Palm to another computer with Outlook
2003 & then exported the contacts successfully from it.

I've run the Outlook repair along with an Office repair but neither of those
made any difference.

Thanks for your help.

Just to be sure that we are both on the same page regarding this:

From Outlook Menu bar - you click File --> then click <Import and
Export> --> nothing happens...................no window/dialog of any kind
(no need to wait for more than a second or two - 10 seconds absolute max)

First question that comes to mind is "were <all> the import/export filters
ever actually installed?" Quick way to find out, re-run your Office
setup --> Add/Remove Options and check if these were selected under Outlook
options. If no, select them and let the setup process continue.

If it does show up as being selected, then something is really strange given
that you state you've gone thru the Office Diag process. Either something is
interfering with the process or something has become really corrupted.
After making doubly sure that the Import/Export filters were in fact
installed and disabling all 3rd party addins to minimize interference) -
would uninstall/re-install Outlook using the same process mentioned above
doing a custom install and manually selecting all the setup options. This is
not a scenario I've run across before.
