[Outlook 2002] typing in name uses different email address

S

Sean Dalziel

Hi,

I am having a problem with my copy of Outlook 2002, when I type in a
recipient's name Outlook uses a different email address than what is
set in the Contact list. The correct recipient appears but the wrong
email address is used.

I have deleted the contact in the Address book
changed the address in the Contact List
deleted the contact completely in the Contact List (as part of the
test)
checked the Active Directory for any sign of that email address
deleted the email messages with that old address in it

Please let me know if you have any more advice on what I should do.

The AutoComplete cache in Outlook 2002 is based on addresses you type
into new mail messages, not on your Contacts. If you want to delete
individual entries, start typing a name into a new mail message, and
when the list comes up, point to the entry you want to delete (so that
it's highlighted) and press Delete. To delete the whole cache and start
over, look for a file with an .NK2 extension and rename it or move it.
Outlook will start a new cache file the next time an e-mail address is
typed into a new mail message. Note that if you're using Windows 2000
or XP, you'll need to search in hidden and system folders to find the
..NK2 file (it also helps to have file extensions visible).

Jocelyn,

That has fixed my issue, thank you for your help. Will turning off
the AutoComplete feature also remove this problem? Is it possible to
set a priority as to which email address to use such as using Contacts
before the cache?

Turning off AutoComplete should remove the problem, though it seems a
little bit drastic to me, unless it's happening constantly. Since
AutoComplete only works against what you've typed in, it doesn't search
Contacts at all, so there's no way to tell it to do so. In order to use
an address from Contacts in AutoComplete, you'd need to start typing the
name or address into a new mail message, then press CTRL-K to try to
resolve it against your Contacts. If you find a match and select that
address, then that address will be stored in the AutoComplete cache.
But as you can see, even that requires manual effort on your part; it's
not going to do an automatic search of your Contacts folder for matches.
