OUtlook 2002 not connecting to email service

Ever since I allowed Microsoft to install a set of hotfixes and updates, my
Outlook 2002 will not connect to any POP3 or SMTP servers. I have accounts
on Verizon and Earthlink, and, at the same time, they stopped connecting.

I have spoken with Verizon tech support, and they verify that I am getting
in to each account from the web interface, but they cannot tell my why I am
getting turned away at the POP3 and SMTP ports. I did not change any other
settings during the updates.

Subsequently, I have deleted all the accounts from the Outlook client and
rebuilt one of them. I have done a complete uninstall and re-install of the
client, and rebuilt one of the accounts again. About the only thing I have
left is to completely rebuild my system.

Again, this happend immediately....and I mean "IMMEDIATELY"....after
downloading and installing all the patches and hotfixes and updates that
Windows Update suggested.

Any ideas?

I have this exact same problem. Except, mine first started when I tried to
point my Outlook to a new pst file. When I couldn't get the pointers to
successfully recognize the new location, I uninstalled and reinstalled Office
in an attempt to resent the pointers. After re-installing Office 2003, I
started to get the error about connecting to POP and SMTP.

Here is the exact message:

Find incoming mail server (POP3): Outlook could not connect to the incoming
mail server (POP3). The problem would be the server name or port, or your
server may not support SSL. Verify your port and SSL settings in the More
Settings under the Advanced tab.

I look forward to the responses on your problem since it seems that I have
the same one.

State exactly what you did to "point my Outlook to a new PST file."

This has nothing to do with the PST. This is an account configuration
issue.
