Outlook 2002 - can't send e-mails

Guest

I've been getting this message for a week now: "The connection to the server
has failed. Account: 'Mail', Server: 'smtp1.sympatico.ca', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

Also get error 0x80042109 when I use Outlook - I'm receiving but can't send

Spoke with the ISP - they say it's not them (surprise surprise) have
uninstalled & reinstalled everything & nothing is working - lastest from ISP
is re-install windows - any other suggestions?

Hi I have been experiencing same issue for past week as well...but I am
unable to see steps to rectify in the emails in this tree. I receive error
message :Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible
causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period
of inactivity. Account: 'xxxxxxx', Server: 'SMTP.comcast.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F. (message same for port 587)
I have done the following:
-disabled anti virus/firewall;
-reset all settings in OE
-set up new account and new OE in that account-same error message;
-changed ports from 25 to 597 ...and back again
- unchecked requires secure authentication
-re booted system.
-corresponded with three other forums as well as comcast with no solution
yet.
Regards
I am using xp service pack 2 home edition.

tried that - doesn't work - just times out after about 30 seconds

Ok, well, honestly, that clears Outlook as the problem. So, try this:
Start - run - cmd, and at the command prompt: ping <address of smtp server>

What is the address of the smtp server, anyways?

Unfortunately, for Outlook Express support, you'll want to ask in the
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general newsgroup.

Since you're also using the web based newsreader rather than outlook
express, you might want to use
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...px?dg=microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general
(or, since you're using Outlook Express for mail, look at the steps in
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/newsgroups101.mspx for
how to set up OE to use the microsoft newsgroup server).

Does it at least resolve to an IP address? If yes, what is the IP address
it resolves to? Most servers do tend to block pings, just figured I'd
check.

As for telnet, I can't telnet to port 25 at smtp1.sympatico.ca either. That
could be because I'm not on the network, or something else. Can you go to
start - run - telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com 25 and get a connection?
That should tell us if you're blocked somewhere else. You are connected to
sympatico.ca as your ISP, right?

Do you have any firewall or other safety type software installed on your
computer? Do you have a different computer on this same network you can try
these steps from?

Really? You get a header? I get a connection, but I never get a 250
header. Bit annoying that. =)

Tho, the fact that he can't connect to anything on port 25, it's got to be
something running on the system blocking that port outbound. That's the
only thing that makes sense, considering the gmail server should answer
since it's the MX record (and exists).

No security software at all - uninstalled everything...i'm borrowing a
laptop
on monday to see if i can connect with it...is this starting to sound like
i
do need to reinstall window?

Depends upon how much value you place on your time, how recent your data
backups are, how comfortable you are restoring your system, etc, etc etc.

There's no saying that a call into technical support will fix the problem
without a reinstall, thus would waste more time. Honestly, your first
solution might be to call in a local friend who is tech savvy who can take a
second look at the system, jsut to see if there's anything we've missed.
