Outlook 2000 will not save new contacts

G

GWL

For the past two weeks I have been trying to figure out why I cannot get
Outlook 2000 to save new contact information. This started as an
intermittent problem that now has progressed to permanent status. When I try
to save any new contact information I get the " Outlook has encountered a
problem & needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message
dialog box. I send the error message and the program closes. I am now at
the place where Outlook is unusable for any new contact information. I have
run the repair outlook routine without success. I suspect the .pst file but
do not know how to repair it. Anyone know what is going on here?

I have compacted and reduced the pst file to no avail. I have found at least
one record that will not delete, open or modify in any way. Any activity
with this record will generate the" Outlook has encountered a problem &
needs to close" error. If this record is the problem, I do not seem to have
a way to delete it from Outlook. I guess it is possible that it is tied to
another record (cross linked) somehow, but a solution escapes me.

Have you tried running the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) against your
..PST file to see if it finds any errors? Note that this is not the same
thing as running Detect and Repair...

I did not know about scanpst and I just ran it. It showed errors and
repaired them, but the problem remains. If I start a new contact and save
with name only, the contact saves. If I go on to add a Phone number or
address (each independently) I get the error message and outlook closes. I
ran scanpst a second time and it revealed no additional errors.

Jocelyn, I have tried everything that you have suggested except the program
that must be purchased. Still no go. I did do some more trouble shooting
this morning and may have found a clue for someone who understands Outlook
better than me. I no longer suspect the PST file because I moved the old
files and forced Outlook to create a new file with no data. Even this new
file cannot save with the same exact error message. Do you think I should
try an uninstall and reinstall instead of the repair that did not work.
Maybe some registry key is corrupted?

You could try it, but unfortunately reinstalling Outlook usually doesn't
change the files that seem to cause the most problems. Does the error
dialog you get when Outlook crashes give you any details to look at? If
so, what are they? You might try searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base
for error messages such as the one you're getting...there may be some
other files you can try deleting. Also, you could try deleting and
recreating your mail profile(s), which sometimes helps cure various
ills.

Well I went ahead and completely uninstalled Outlook, did a cold boot and
reinstalled after being sure that all the outlook folders scattered around
the hard disk were empty. Opened the new Outlook and the same problem exists
even with a newly created empty PST. The error message is the cryptic
"Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry ect.". No other
info in the error message. I did try to read the error report that is
generated to Microsoft, but it appeared to be just long listing of memory
addresses. The only clue that I have discovered is that a new entry will
save properly only if I do not try to include an address. Every attempt to
access the address dialog box will result in the error when Save and Close
is clicked or if any form of a save is attempted. So it appears to be
something in the address system that is causing the error.

Unfortunately I've pretty much exhausted everything I can think of on
this one...the only thing I can suggest is that you start a new thread
(possibly in microsoft.public.outlook.contacts, only because that's
where the problem seems to lie), and describe what you've already done
to troubleshoot the problem. Perhaps someone else will be able to give
you more guidance. Sorry I couldn't help you further.
