outlook 2000 not shutting down properly

J

Jack Folliard

I've noticed that even when I close Outlook 2000, it still seems to be
running in background as it's listed under "Processes" in Task Manager.
this produces a problem when using Outlook Backup - that program will not
commence a backup session unless Outlook is completely shut down. What I've
been doing is closing Outlook normally, then opening task manager and
"ending" Outlook in task manager. Way too many steps, of course.

What's going on? - sometimes I note 2 or 3 versions of Outlook listed as
active processes in task manager?!@!

Thanks for any help.

That periodically has happened to me, more often with the older versions of
Outlook. I haven't seen it yet with Outlook 2003 but then I haven't been
using it that long. And yes, the only way out is to kill the task - I
suspect that the mapi process is hung waiting for something that it either
misses or never occurs.

It isn't
very common that Outlook doesn't close on it's own. Practically always this
is caused by an add-in. Once disabled or updated the problem is gone.
Sometimes the add-in are not shown in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button
Advanced Options...-> button Add-In Manager or button COM Add-ins. If this
is the case you'll have to disable the integration option in the program
itself (like in Norton AntiVirus 2002).

Outlook should always close normally in safe mode;
Start-> Run; "path to Outlookexe" /safe

Which they have solved one service pack ago. Also note that this wasn't the
issue and that I clearly stated that "it isn't very common" Outlook is the
issue. Reading the article you provided confirms this as the issue states a
not very commonly used operations in Outlook.

But point taken; Outlook CAN be the issue on it's own as well.
