Outlook 2000 matching a non-existent name

I seem to have "confused" the Contacts folder of Outlook 2000 on Windows XP
Pro. (No Exchange server in the picture.)

I used Outlook's "Add to Contacts" feature to put someone (let's call him
(e-mail address removed)) on my address list. Since I didn't know his first
name, he went on as "Jbrown". Later, I wanted to add the first name, John.
I can't remember whether I changed the existing record, or added a new
record or deleted the old one. Either way, my Contacts folder looked OK --
"John Brown" appeared as an entry, with (e-mail address removed) in the e-mail
address field, and jbrown did not appear. When I send a message, the To:
field displays "John Brown" correctly. But when I receive a message,
Outlook displays "Jbrown" in the From: field instead of "John Brown". The
only explanation that comes to mind is that the "Jbrown" entry is still
lurking in the .pst file somewhere, and because it precedes "John Brown"
alphabetically, Outlook's name-checking feature finds it first.

This happened once before when I gave a husband and wife who share the same
e-mail address their own entries in my Contacts list. All the wife's
e-mails came in under the husband's name, even after I deleted his record.

What can I do about this?

Try searching for and deleting or renaming a file ending in ".NICK"

Thanks very much for this. I found and deleted the .nick, although it
had nothing in it. Won't know whether it works until I get mail from
certain contacts.

In the meantime, I found an excellent article on this site explaining
all about nicknames and auto name check. It included a link for
downloading a Microsoft utility called nickname.exe, but it wasn't
valid anymore. You don't happen to know where I can get the Outlook
2000 version, do you?

No, sorry.
