Outlook 2000 Contacts folder dysfunctional

I run W2k Pro sp4 / Office 2k /AVG Zone Alarm 4.5
on a little desktop at home ("56k" dial-in only).
The OS is up-to-date. Outlook 2000 is at 9.0.0.9211
and I use it for internet Email.

If I use my Contacts folder to send a message, the
message usually fails to transmit.

If I bring up Address Book (defaulting to the
Contacts folder) and rt-click Properties I get:

"The Properties dialog box could not be displayed.
An invalid ENTRYID was passed in."

When I display the Contacts folder the names look OK.
But most of the Email addresses are missing. All
were complete at one time or another.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing
this behavior? What I might be able to do to
fix it?

If the Contacts folder can't be repaired, how
would I go about trashing it and starting a
new one??

Any/all info/help would be much appreciated.

connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset the connection,
depending on your Outlook version. Note that in some instances you may
actually have to remove the Outlook Address Book completely from your
Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Outlook 2000, Corp/Workgroup:
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.

Outlook 2002/2003:
Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the OAB in the Directories
and Address Books list, click the Back button, then select "Add a new
directory or address book", then "Additional Address Books", and add the
OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the first dialog box,
and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as you did earlier.
Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click Change to make
sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed. If any of them
aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders as Outlook
Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, clicking
the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as an
E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making these
changes.

What mail support mode are you using? Look at line 2 of Help | About if you
don't know. If you are using "Internet Mail Only" mode than you aren't even
using the Outlook Address Book, and none of this will apply to you.

Is the problem with your Address Book or your Contacts Folder?

Its strange. When I go Start > Ctnl Panel > Mail, it fails
to put anything on the screen.

You mean when you go to Control Panel > Mail, _nothing_ happens? You get no
dialog box that lets you create a profile? How long has this been the case?
Any idea what caused this? It looks like your entire installation is
corrupt. Try running a Detect and Repair. Then try repairing your PST file
with the Inbox Repair Tool.

I didn't this morning. I do now. Perhaps I had
too many sessions going and it just displayed it
where I couldn't see it.
How long has this been the case?

First time I'd seen it.
Any idea what caused this? It looks like your entire installation is
corrupt.

It was probably something silly. O2k Email (all I use it
for) is functional except Contacts.
Try running a Detect and Repair.

It it safe? How does one run it?
Then try repairing your PST file
with the Inbox Repair Tool.

That I should be able to manage. I have the program
and notes on its use. I have run it before.

If, in fact, your Mail icon in Control Panel is functioning after all, there
may be no need for Detect and Repair. But, yes, it is safe and is run from
any Office Help Menu.
Let's just work on the PST file for now.

The OS is up-to-date. Outlook 2000 is at 9.0.0.9211
and I use it for internet Email.

message usually fails to transmit.

If I bring up Address Book (defaulting to the
Contacts folder) and rt-click Properties I get:

"The Properties dialog box could not be displayed.
An invalid ENTRYID was passed in."

When I display the Contacts folder the names look OK.
But most of the Email addresses are missing. All
were complete at one time or another.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing
this behavior? What I might be able to do to
fix it?

If the Contacts folder can't be repaired, how
would I go about trashing it and starting a
new one??

Any/all info/help would be much appreciated.

may be no need for Detect and Repair. But, yes, it is safe and is run from
any Office Help Menu.
Let's just work on the PST file for now.

(about 64 mb). I scanned it with AVG: it appears clean
of virus.

I ran the Inbox Repair Tool. It said there were no
errors.

current problem as clearly as you can. You said email addresses were missing

connected to the correct PST file? What steps caused this mess?

Well I did look back through all your old posts, of course, and that's when
I got lost trying to track down whether the problem was with your Contacts
Folder (highly uncommon), or its connection to your Outlook Address Book
(practically a daily occurrence around here). From what you are describing
you're telling me that your Contacts Folder became corrupt and that suddenly
email addresses disappeared all by themselves. That is nearly inexplicable
and unprecedented. The only recovery options for PST files is the Inbox
Repair Tool alternating with a scandisk utility.

message usually fails to transmit.

If I bring up Address Book (defaulting to the
Contacts folder) and rt-click Properties I get:

"The Properties dialog box could not be displayed.
An invalid ENTRYID was passed in."

When I display the Contacts folder the names look OK.
But most of the Email addresses are missing. All
were complete at one time or another.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing
this behavior? What I might be able to do to
fix it?

If the Contacts folder can't be repaired, how
would I go about trashing it and starting a
new one??

Any/all info/help would be much appreciated.

I got lost trying to track down whether the problem was with your Contacts
Folder (highly uncommon), or its connection to your Outlook Address Book
(practically a daily occurrence around here). From what you are describing
you're telling me that your Contacts Folder became corrupt and that suddenly
email addresses disappeared all by themselves.

I can't say that it happened suddenly. Only that it happened.
That is nearly inexplicable
and unprecedented.

For OL2K? Its hard for me to view it as such.
The only recovery options for PST files is the Inbox
Repair Tool alternating with a scandisk utility.

I run chkdsk every week before I back up the entire
partition. No current problems.

Any hope for a delete-and-rebuild strategy for the
Contacts folder? If so, a bit of step-by-step
instruction would be much appreciated.

It was probably something silly. O2k Email (all I use it
for) is functional except Contacts.

Try running a Detect and Repair.

It it safe? How does one run it?

Then try repairing your PST file
with the Inbox Repair Tool.

That I should be able to manage. I have the program
and notes on its use. I have run it before.

Did you try the Inbox Repair Tool? That is the only supported recovery tool
for PST files. There is one other third party utility, but I can't attest to
its efficacy.
You seem to be pretty careful. Didn't you back up your data file? If so, it
will be easy to restore just by setting your backup to be the default data
file in your profile.

The problem didn't just happen. Its been going on for
months. I take a whole-partition backup each week.
Everything thats wrong in the active partition is
also wrong in the backup at this point in time.

It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track"
of
the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your
PST
or
update
your Outlook version or OS. Use the following steps to reset

connection,

actually have to remove the Outlook Address Book completely
from
your
Profile, close Outlook, and then re-add it before you can get

work.

listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or
folders
you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the

tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book"
box.
You
may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose
to
show
your
Contacts folder.

Couldn't find an Addressing Tab under Tools > Options. The
rest
of
it
was already set up per above.

Just tested. Even with the Email address in contacts and the
corresponding name in the to: field, the message bounces
fast ("undeliverable") b/c it's not using the email address.

Any additional help much appreciated.

I run W2k Pro sp4 / Office 2k /AVG Zone Alarm 4.5
on a little desktop at home ("56k" dial-in only).
The OS is up-to-date. Outlook 2000 is at 9.0.0.9211
and I use it for internet Email.

If I use my Contacts folder to send a message, the
message usually fails to transmit.

If I bring up Address Book (defaulting to the
Contacts folder) and rt-click Properties I get:

"The Properties dialog box could not be displayed.
An invalid ENTRYID was passed in."

When I display the Contacts folder the names look OK.
But most of the Email addresses are missing. All
were complete at one time or another.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing
this behavior? What I might be able to do to
fix it?

If the Contacts folder can't be repaired, how
would I go about trashing it and starting a
new one??

Any/all info/help would be much appreciated.

Sorry. Some of these posts aren't appearing in my thread. Indeed, if these
problems have been occurring for months, there is nothing I can do to help

Yes. This was clearly stated in a very recent message.
You are losing it ...
That is the only supported recovery tool
for PST files. There is one other third party utility, but I can't attest to
its efficacy.
You seem to be pretty careful. Didn't you back up your data file? If so, it
will be easy to restore just by setting your backup to be the default data
file in your profile.

The problem didn't just happen. Its been going on for
months. I take a whole-partition backup each week.
Everything thats wrong in the active partition is
also wrong in the backup at this point in time.

I got lost trying to track down whether the problem was with your Contacts
Folder (highly uncommon), or its connection to your Outlook Address Book
(practically a daily occurrence around here). From what you are describing
you're telling me that your Contacts Folder became corrupt and that
suddenly
email addresses disappeared all by themselves.

I can't say that it happened suddenly. Only that it happened.

That is nearly inexplicable
and unprecedented.

For OL2K? Its hard for me to view it as such.

The only recovery options for PST files is the Inbox
Repair Tool alternating with a scandisk utility.

I run chkdsk every week before I back up the entire
partition. No current problems.

Any hope for a delete-and-rebuild strategy for the
Contacts folder? If so, a bit of step-by-step
instruction would be much appreciated.

I assume you have access to the previous posts. Reread
'em if you want. Don't if you don't.

You said email addresses were missing
from your Contacts Folder, right?

About 70% disappeared thru no action on my part.
The rest are only useful for visual inspection.

Are you certain you have the correct PST
file specified in this profile and that you have the Outlook Address
Book
connected to the correct PST file?

Yes. It's been checked and re-checked.

What steps caused this mess?

Just trying to maintain OL2k on W2kP for years
with mostly normal usage.

If, in fact, your Mail icon in Control Panel is functioning after all,
there
may be no need for Detect and Repair. But, yes, it is safe and is run
from
any Office Help Menu.
Let's just work on the PST file for now.

The Address Book is associated with the Contacts
folder which is stored in d:\Outlook_Old\042102.pst
(about 64 mb). I scanned it with AVG: it appears clean
of virus.

I ran the Inbox Repair Tool. It said there were no
errors.

Wondering where to go from here ...

You mean when you go to Control Panel > Mail, _nothing_ happens?
You get no
dialog box that lets you create a profile?

I didn't this morning. I do now. Perhaps I had
too many sessions going and it just displayed it
where I couldn't see it.

How long has this been the case?

First time I'd seen it.

Any idea what caused this? It looks like your entire installation is
corrupt.

It was probably something silly. O2k Email (all I use it
for) is functional except Contacts.

Try running a Detect and Repair.

It it safe? How does one run it?

Then try repairing your PST file
with the Inbox Repair Tool.

That I should be able to manage. I have the program
and notes on its use. I have run it before.

The Outlook Address Book is not supposed to contain any entries.
It
only
holds the folders that you want to display in the Address Book.
Those
folders contain the entries.

So the issue is with "Contacts" ...

The information I already posted will provide the solution. Tell

I'll repost the information for your version:
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service
is
listed.

Check. The Outlook Address Book is one of five listed services.

If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook
Address
Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book"
box.

Verified. The "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box
has been checked for many, many moons.

You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to
show
your
Contacts folder.

This doesn't show from Tools > Options. But when I choose
properties for my O2k icon, I see the Addressing tab. All
3 specifications on that tab were long-ago set to "Contacts".

The Contacts folder is associated with my .pst file. Could
this be a problem?

Its strange. When I go Start > Ctnl Panel > Mail, it fails
to put anything on the screen.

Need some more information then.
What mail support mode are you using? Look at line 2 of Help |

if
you
don't know. If you are using "Internet Mail Only" mode than you
aren't
even
using the Outlook Address Book, and none of this will apply to
you.

Line 2 sez "Corporate or Workgroup".

I have several info services set up. One is "Outlook Address
Book". Two are "Internet Email", each associated with a
different POP server. I used to connect to MS Exchange
years ago.

Is the problem with your Address Book or your Contacts Folder?

It sez "no entries in address book" so I guess its
the Contacts Folder.
