Outlook 2000 and POP3 Connectivity

J

JeaneM

Some of our users get an error message when they press F5
or the "Send/Receive" button in the Outlook 2000. The
error message is:

"The POP3 server name you specified cannot be found.
Please check the name and try again"

The POP3 server name is correct and the Internet
connection is fine. The user needs to restart the Outlook
2000, or sometimes need to restart the Windows to solve
the problem.

Thru the command line, we can ping the server. We tried
putting in the server's IP address in the POP3 account
name, rather than the DNS and it didn't make any
difference. We don't have our own email server, we use an
outside service.

This is not a one-time, one user issue. It happens
sporadically. A user can start Outlook and get their mail
at 8:00 am, then click "Send/Receive" at 8:30 am and get
the error. Close Outlook, wait 15 minutes, open again and
get mail just fine. It can happen once or a few times
each day, or not at all. It can happen to one user, while
all the rest are just fine.

It's consistent in its inconsistency!

Help!!
Any help would be appreciated"

Maybe someone out there will have an answer or lead.

I too am looking for a solution (actually, the problem) for this
seemingly random glitch. As a provider of web hosting services support
I have been receiving this complaint from a number of our clients.
They automatically assume it is our mail servers going down. Advising
them to restart Outlook corrects their problem.

I, personally, have 12 email accounts from a variety of service
providers. At times (totally random) Outlook errors on one or more
saying it cannot find the server(s). Restarting Outlook corrects the
problem. It is also random on which account(s) it does this with.

I am glad to hear soeone else with this problem (although I feel for
your dilema, as it is also mine). If you find anything about this
plaease let me know, and I will do likewise. I have sent in a bug
report to Microsoft about this some time ago but have heard nothing.

Sincerely,
Robin Ptasiuk
