Outlook 03 Contacts Sorting Question

Stand alone 03 Outlook AT&T ISP: My "Detailed View" Contacts page via the
Folders List Sorts by Last name, First name (Ascending format nets A - Z)-
If I choose a Recipient in "To:", and then Clk the Book Icon next to "To" to
see more Contacts (resulting screen says Show names from: "Contacts" Vs.
Address Book) the Recipients are Sorted By First name, Last name. I have
verified that Clking on the Full name box (on Main Contacts page) shows the
last name as Jones and the first name as Bill, but this Contacts List via the
Book Icon Sorts By First name. How Do You Change It to Sort by Last, then
First name as the "Main" Contacts page does? Many Thanks!

Choose Tools | Email Accounts > View or change existing directories or address books. Select Outlook Address Book, then click Change. You'll see choices for using First Last or the File As field, which is set by default to Last, First.

Thanks, Sue. As a horrible creature of habit I think I read (after my own
Search originally) "Change the---" and my brain went to Email Accounts
(rather than Directories) which of course was a dead end. This was too easy
and I feel so stupid. Thanks again.

I just tried your solution specifying Last, First after converting from
Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003 and my contacts still come up sorted by first
name when I select TO: in a new email. I closed and re-opened Outlook too.
Note, my Contacts folder shows all contacts sorted by last name (and last
name is specified in the Contacts Options under Tool->Options)

The only difference I can note is that my contacts are stored as a Personal
Address Book rather than a Outlook Address Book at C:\Documents and
Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\mailbox.PAB.

The instructions I gave are for the Outlook Address Book, not the Personal Address Book. If there is a setting to adjust it, it would be in the properties for that type of address list.

Per Outlook instructions I designated the Contacts as an Outlook Address Book
in its properties and it shows up as an Outlook address Book when I go to
change the the address book default sort settings. I do not see a setting to
adjust the Contacts specifically to set the last name other than where you
cited below (which has in the past version pertained to any address book
too).

How can I transfer my Contacts to the Outlook Address Book? and then make
that the default that comes up for addresses?

Thanks

To import the contents of a Personal Address Book into an Outlook contacts folder, use the File | Import and Export command on Outlook's main menu.

You set the sort order by clicking Tools>E-Mail Accounts>View or change
existing directories or address books>Next, selecting the Outlook Address
Book services, clicking Change and choosing the sort order you want. After
selecting it, stop and restart Outlook.

You don't "transfer" anything. If the Outlook Address Book service is
opartt of your mail profile, any COntacts folder you have marked to display
as an address book will be included automatically in the Address Book
display. The address book is just a view of the electronic addresses in
your Contacts folder(s).

Brian,

I have set the sort order to Last Name (exactly what you stipulated below
stopped and restarted OUTLOOK multiple times). It DOES NOT change the sort
order. Other ideas?
