Outline Numbering in Word 2003

I have experienced problems with Outline Numbering in previous versions of Word. I have created numbering such as
1. Heading (Level 1
1.1 Heading (Level 2
1.1.1 Heading (Level 3
When beginning 1.2 and then 1.2.1, 1.2.2, it often reverted to 1.1 or such like, completely destroying the numbering sequence of my 100 page document and necessitating hours of correction. As I result I have reverted to manual numbering of paragraphs. Is this problem fixed in Word 2003?
