Out of Office - Outlook 2003/Exchange Server 2003

I'm having an issue with some of my users where some users can setup their
OOF in Outlook or OWA and it will respond properly while for others when they
set it up it will not send a reply to anyone. No error messages get
displayed on the client when setting it up.

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall Outlook. Tried to recreate profiles,
reapplied SP2 on Exchange and have come up empty thus far.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi Jason,

Try the following:

1. Find mdbvu32.exe in the \support\utils directory on any of the Exchange
Server CDs.
2. Run mdbvu32.exe.
3. Click OK to clear the first window that pops up.
4. Make sure that your profile is selected in the Choose Profile window and
click OK.
5. Click on the MDB menu option.
6. Click on the OpenMessageStore option.
7. Make sure that "Mailbox- [user's full name]" is selected and click on Open.
8. Click on the MDB menu option again.
9. Click Open Root Folder.
10. In the Child Folders box - double click on "Top of Information Store".
11. In the next Child Folders box - double click on "Inbox".
12. Look in the Associated Messages in Fld box. All of your rules are in
this box.
13. Once you find the rule that you want to delete then close the properties
for that rule.
14. On the MAPI_FOLDER page make sure that the rule that you want to delete
is still highlighted.
15. In the "Operations available (select operation, then push Call Function
button)" text box, push the drop down button to reveal the list of functions.
16. Scroll down the list of functions until you see "lpFld ->
deleteMessages() (ON SELECTED MSGS)" and then click on it to select it.
17. Next press the Call Function button. This will delete the rule that you
selected.
18. Press the Close button to exit the MAPI_FOLDER window.
19. Press Close again to exit the next window.
20. Press Close again to exit the last window.
21. Click on the MDB menu option.
22. Click Store Logoff. Then click OK and OK again.
23. Click Session and then click on Exit.

Let me know if that works out for you or not.

Okay I tried doing that to one of the affected users. After having them open
Outlook again it asked if they wanted to turn the OOF off. Said Yes to that
dialog box and the proceeded to try to turn it on again. This time it comes
up and says there is not enough memory or the rules are too complex.
However, there are no other rules defined within it. It's simply a case of
just turning OOF on, adding the reply message and clicking OK.

Any other thoughts?

Use mdbvue32 to get into his mailbox and see if there may be lots of weird
repetitive rules. This could consume the 32k limit. If there are, then you
can delete them. Use mdbvue32 to determine if there are hidden\orphaned rules
that may not be visible in Outlook. You can try the /cleanrules switch as
well to see if that works.

Hey Kathleen,

Thanks for the help. In the interim between responses I had also found KB
article 924297 that worked basically the same as mdbvu32 only it used the
MfcMapi program to perform the fix. Doing this has resolved the issue for me
finally! :D

Thanks again for the assistance. It is very much appreciated. :D
