[OT] New cd single: cd player sees music tracks, pc sees only a videofile???

Hi all,

I bought a cd single yesterday and today went to play it on my pc. This
is where I play all my music. Surprisingly, the only 'music' file the cd
player on my WinXP Home box sees is a video file. The three music files
are apparently hidden from explorer and the command prompt.

I've never come across this before. I've been doing google searches with
various keywords for about half an hour now without success in
discovering what is going on and how to work around it. I'm in the
process of backing up my cd's to my file server as mp3s, and it seems
like there's going to be a problem with this one! :-(

Can anyone tell me what I've stumbled into with this cd single and what
can be done to get my WinXP Home box to see the audio tracks? My cheapo
portable cd player sees the three audio tracks.

TIA,

Ari

NB: This is from Win2000, some parts of XP may differ.....
i.e. YMMV

In explorer, go to tools, view, and make sure that "Show hidden files
and folders" IS checked.

Make sure that "Hide protected operating system files" is NOT checked.

Thanks Rich, but that's not the issue here. It's a form of copy
protection and there was no warning on the cd or its packaging about it.
The cd is made so that two tracks exist, one for data and one for audio.
Apparently cdroms and cd players behave slightly differently, and the
cdrom will see the data track and stop there and the cdplayer will see
the audio track and stop there. I used isobuster to find the audio and
extract it to .wav.

It's copy protection! It is NOT a standard CD to the Philips standard.
Try holding Shift key when loading. If it does not do what you want it to do
you can take it back for a refund unless it states on the package that it
has restrictions (in small print usually).
Mike.
