OT Message: My Disability

S

Stuart Grey

Hi Everyone:
I have a neurological disability called Asperger's Syndrome.
I would like to give you some information about my disability. The
reason I am posting this message about Asperger's is to help avoid any
potential misunderstandings [though it's probably too late].
I have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (AS). AS is a
neurological condition that causes significant impairment in social
interactions. People with AS see the world differently and this can
often bring them in conflict with conventional ways of thinking. They
have difficulty in reading body language, and interpreting subtle
cues. In my situation, I have significant difficulty with natural
conversation, reading social cues, and maintaining eye contact. This
can lead to a great deal of misunderstanding about my intent or my
behavior. For example, I may not always know what to say in social
situations, so I may look away or may not say anything. I also may not
always respond quickly when asked direct questions, but if given time
I am able express my ideas.
On Usenet, the text-equivalent of my disability is probably noticed. I
do apologize profusely, for any inconvenience it causes.
Thank you very much in advance for your understanding, cooperation,
and assistance.

So you`re a typical radio ham then ????

I tried ham once... but I didn't have any disabilities or illnesses to
share over the radio.

For all we know, it's Bill Gates.

I've got a knee injury. Just thought I'd mention that since we're doing
confessions.-

I'm slightly sunburned from a week at Virginia Beach.

Society always gives people with sunburns a bum rap.

We were talking about illnesses and injuries. I guess yours is apathy.

I thought Notan was confessing his illness. I mean, he's just too
apathetic to get into tree hugging. All the other tree huggers say he's
sap challenged.

hmmmm. ok, I am not sure how to respond to this:
1. you are either trying to get some sympathy attention (in which case, it
won't work and everyone will pile on you more for it)
2. you really do have it (highly unlikely as I know folks with this who are
extremely successful and make no claim to having it publically)

in any case, I know folks with AS and they are very reticent about making it
public (most people won't understand and oft times assume that the body
language, etc would still be that of someone suspicious). Most of those I
know with AS have one additional point: they don't get emotionally
involved. for them, logic is the better answer. So.... pardon my finding it
hard to believe you actually have AS.

It's and agressive, debilitating disease.

My granddaughter was diagnosed with Asperbergers - my suspicion is
that was done at the insistence of her mother - I see no evidence of
any psychiatric or neurologic disease in this physically gorgeous, GPA
4.0, and artistically talented 15 yo girl, who has insisted since the
3rd grade she is going to be a DVM (and is creating the academic
record to do it)...

Just because someone got some psychologist/social-worker to hang a
label on a child, does not necessarily mean it is so...

You are right Denny, I see this quite often. People seem to want and
demand justification for their children's quirks and minor
psychological dysfunctions, in the form of a diagnosis that can be
connected to a physiological/biochemical cause. Not many parents/
adults want to face the fact that they have some basic minor form
(treatable without the use of medication) of mental illiness, and pass
such issues on to their children throught day to day interaction,
dietary skills, and or child rearing skills, which in turn amplifies
the symptoms manifested by the child.

Of course, there are those who do have very minor forms of Aspergers
who function quite well, so your GD could have or not have Aspergers.
Aspergers mostly affects the socialistic/behavioral aspects of
functioning, so you can have a person that actually has Aspergers and
an IQ of 150, but is inept to handle peer-to-peer relationships,
whereas the root cause has been determined to be physiological, not
just psychological. But that is not to say that every person who
functions normally and has some traits of Aspergers, actually has the
syndrome. There is specific testing and criteria that determines
whether Aspergers is the correct diagnosis, but in its milder forms it
is harder to diagnose and quite often it is the wrong diagnosis.

So? Why mention it?
Because ever since King George got into the White House, a lot of
people learned that they can set higher goals in spite of their
autism!

Finally someone has noted that Asperger's Syndrome is one form of
autism.
interesting I was unawar e of that myself BB
If you visit your local schools you will find whole
classrooms full of autistic kids - almost entirely boys. It's an
epidemic!

in many areas in some areas they are dumped around and trated badly
For Radium to be able to post his message places him in the "high-
functioning" category. Many are not high-functioning

nice to see you BB

I remeber back in the 60s my sister in law did a survey of autistic
kids in our school sytem. The elementatry grades hade about 650
students and there were six autistic kids. Numbers sound about the
same now aas then.

No prob at all, one of my friend has Asperger. He's pretty smart
though and never had any problems seeing sense or nonsense for that
matter. Also one of the best person I've gotten to know from the net,
although admittedly he claims he does better online than in life. =P

I don't know about your friend, but most "Asperger's Syndrome"
diagnoses are self-diagnoses. The number of proclaimed AS cases has
gone up by a factor of 20 since 1980.

It's the trendy self-diagnosis, much the way "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"
is.

As in:

"He's a genius, but he plays Worlds of Warcraft all day in his mother's
rec room because he's got Asperger's. So sad."

"I can't work and am on permanent disability because of Chronic
Fatigue."

Add to this the casual self-diagnoses--or diagnoses with the help of a
suitably-chosen doctor--of "Attention Deficit Disorder" (ADD and ADHD)
and "Bipoloar Disorder," and one sees that society is providing many
excuses for failure.

We taxpayers are expected to work harder and longer to pay for the
upkeep of a rapidly-expanding number of AS, CFS, ADHD, and BD
layabouts.

And don't forget all the pharmaceutical money to be made off of these
"conditions". Think of all those school kids out there getting ritalin
along with their milk and cookies. $$$$$$$$$$

In his case, he went through quite a lot of examinations before the
diagnosis was made so I doubt it was self diagnosis. Frankly most of
us are clinically insane one way or another, if not many ways, so I
don't really care if my friends has AS or BS, there's no excuse for
being mean or stupid as a result of being too lazy to think =P

Since Asperger's is is described as a mild form of Autism, it leaves
a lot of doors open for diagnosis. In fact any circumscribed area of
interest: cars, computers, trains, meteorology and astrononi...etc.
could be a symptom of Asperger's http://www.aspergers.com/aspclin.htm
Any nerd characteristics is certainly very suspect. Anyone who dives
into one particular subject. Doing math is certainly a health hazard.

I sometimes wonder if all this really comes from some dissatisfaction
by others who would like to get closer to the sufferer, but doesn't
quite catch their imagination. Hence it's as much other people's
problem as the sufferers. There should be an Asperger's contact
deficiency syndrome...

Wow! Tim, you may have figured where SSI went wrong - they're now
accepting self diagnoses of disabilities.

Maybe we can head this thing off by requiring an MD diagnoses!!!
