OSX10.3.3-->Win2K Column view and open/save dialogues SLOW.

Column view and open/save dialogues SLOW.

I've lost nearly every hair on my head trying to figure
this one out but I think I've got this down to an issue
with OSX 10.3.3 and Win2K server.

First I applied service pack 4 to our server since I was
still at initial install rev. That didn't help anything!

Then I dug out an 'ol iMac under my desk with bad
monitor which is runnning 10.2.3 and it seemed to
work fine. Go figure. After SEVERAL tests I conclude
something is broke between 10.2.3 and 10.3.3

I downloaded trial version of Group Logic ExtremeZ-IP to
see if perhaps they were more on the ball with appleshare
than MS's services for mac. and lo and behold column view
seems to have snapped back to at least as fast as that
ol' imac running 10.2.3. Note my 10.3.3 is running on
a G4/1.25 so I was hoping for a little more snap. File listings
seem to come right in but I can still see folder/file icons
redraw cascade down. BUT it's still way better than
selecting a directory and seeing that damn colored beachball.
BUT
I'm sorry to report that ExtremeZ-IP didn't seem to hold up
when it came to plain ol' copying of a 152mb file. It slowed
down dramatically compared to MSsfm. Which goes against
everything GroupLogic claims (they say it will be 2-3x faster!)
But maybe I set it up wrong. Plus I was running MSsfm concurrently
on other shares....
ExtremeZ-IP is NOT approx $2000 for my number of users. ARGH!

Now I'm wondering if I need to look at Windows 2003 Server.
Somebody just shoot me in the head, now....

SO if you're still sitting at 10.2.x I'd stick there for a little while
longer.

any other info?

Hi Mark!

My comments are inline with yours.

FYI, I believe there is a post sp4 hotfix for Print Services for
Macintosh. If you're doing an Mac printing through your server you
should look at this

Panther IS slower to redraw the lists from Windows servers. It's not you
and it's a known issue. You can contact your MS rep for a 120-day
evaluation copy of Windows 2003 Server in case you'd like to investigate
that avenue.
SO if you're still sitting at 10.2.x I'd stick there for a little while
longer.

Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) is rumored to be announced at the WWDC in a couple
of months. If you suggest sticking to 10.2 for now, this may be a good
upgrade alternative in the future.
