OS lock up Win XP

My wife's machine locks up or hangs at will. She has to
reboot to correct it. Next lock up could be in one hour
or so or 20 minutes or right away.

Now and the during reboot she gets a checksum error...
she hits F1 to continue to reboot. Her machine will lock
up regardless if she gets the checksum error or not.

Printer is using a USB cable. She uses Noton Anti-virus.
santa Cruz sound card with newly updated driver. video
card has an Nvida chip GeForce 420 MX.

She believed she had a virus and couldn't get rid of it
so she dumped everything, reformatted the HD and
reinstalled. All seemed to work well except for this lock
up problem. Norton has not found any viruses on her
machine since. She never did find out what virus it was
or if she even had one.

If her machine sits idle most certainly it will be locked
up when she sits down to use it.

What are some things I might want to look at? I have a
feeling I might be looking at the printer with its usb
cable, or the usb camera plug in she has.... take pics
plug in the camera and tranfer the pics to the HD. Or,
perhaps the sound card... incorrectly assigned IRQ? Bob

Golly,Bob,Could be a lot of things.I've recently had a
problem with my video driver Nvidia GeForce 440 MX,kept
locking up,I had NVIDIA support help me out, they had me
do this > start > right click on my computer > properties
hardware tab > device manager > click on display
adapters > right click on Nvidia, and uninstall > then put
the driver disk in the CD Rom and reboot > When it
restarts it runs the wizard for the video driver, and
loads the one that came with it.I guess windows update
had a updated driver that loaded that I wasn't aware of
had a conflict with the video card, happened bout 3 weeks
ago, after doing that it hasn't locked up since.Good
Luck,from another Bob.
