Origins of unknown folder $Winsows.~BT

I had XP installed on my C: drive and I have miscellaneous data (old docs,
pictures, etc., on my H: drive both partitions are on the same physical hard
disk. I recently installed Windows 7 on a second hard drive and now have a
dual boot setup. Now XP shows up as the D: drive. I don't think that has
any relative importance to my question it is just for informational purposes.

Today I looked at the contents of my H: drive and I found a couple of
folders that I didn't put there intentionally one is named $Windows.~BT and
it contains what looks like an abbreviated Windows installation. It has a
Windows folder but it is obviously incomplete, it also has Program Files and
a Users folders and they too only contain a small amount of stuff. The
second folder is named 0a70de098492ec69aa1e73 and it contains two subfolders
named i386 and amd64 these folders are empty.

My suspicion is that these folders were somehow put there by Windows 7 but I
can't confirm that. Does anyone know how such folders are created and are
they needed?
