Order of Details in Open view

I want to view Name, Date Modified, Size, in that order (Type is unimportant
to me, so can come last or be oomitted) -- I can set this order in Windows
Explorer but I also want this order in the Word Open dialogue box. Is this
possible?

I answered your question - Is this possible? Yes it is.

Hopefully the following will meet your request:

In Word screen press CTRL OPEN in last dropdown on top right click on
downward arrow and choose Details or Preview.
Makes sure you have a folder with documents selected as Look in:
Adjust the size of your Dialogue Window to be larger, smaller using your
mouse.
The easiest way if you are unsure is to right click in the heading row
Then select More at bottom of list.
Then check/uncheck the headings you require such as Name Date Modified
Move up or down as per instructions.
Press OK
Now press the CTRL key and at the SAME TIME mouse click on the X in top
right of Dialogue window to save your settings.
Press CTRL O and your settings will be saved as you set them up.

Hope this helps.

In Details view, you can right-click on any column header to get a list of
available items. Any that you don't want can be deselected, and you can
select others. To change the order, press Ctrl while clicking on any header,
then drag it where you want it.

As Jules points out, you can resize the dialog to display more columns while
you're doing this (or you can maximize the dialog by double-clicking the
title bar).

In Word's File/Open or Save dialog box, you can click and hold the
mouse button down on the Date Modified title bar (or other titles) and
drag and drop it where you want. The next time you go to Windows
Explorer, the change will also appear there. If you drag and drop the
title bars in Windows Explorer, the change will automatically appear
in Word's File/Open or Save dialog box.

Thank you, this is the easiest solution of all. Sorry for the late response,
for some reason I didn't get a notification of the replies.
