optorite cd format problems

S

Stephen Larivee

I have a newish computer with an Optorite CD-RW. Model No. 4801. I have
Roxio 6 and Nero 5 on my computer. I can burn CDs fine but I can not format
a CD-RW. I have tried several different types of media and nothing seems to
work. I keep getting an numbered error message and I have not been able to
track down on Roxio's web site any reference to the number.

When I went to the Optorite web site, they do not offer drivers but they do
offer Firmware. The directions for installing the firmware are below. They
have two sets of software listed for the CD4801, one for DOS and the other
for WINDOWS. My version of XP is NTFS formated.

My questions, then, are:
1. Is my problem firmware or not?
2. When they talk about BIOS update method (below) is that the BIOS of the
CD or the BIOS on the motherboard?
3. If I attempt this update, would I use the file from the WINDOWS setup
below since I don't have DOS on an NTFS system?

Any help would be appreciated.

(below is from the www.optorite.com website with firmware files listed under
each category)
A. DOS

The BIOS Update Method
1. Create a bootable floppy disk in accordance with the instructions laid
out in the manual of your particular operating system. This bootable floppy
needs to be able to boot to a DOS console capable of executing normal MS-DOS
batch and executable files.
2. Download and unzip the xxxx.zip file corresponding to your model from the
OptoRite website to the floppy.
3. Boot using your DOS floppy disk to the :\>?command prompt. At the DOS
command prompt type: UPDATE xxxx.bin
4. Select the item which you want to update the drive.
5. The BIOS will automatically flash.
6. Reboot the machine, when finish updating process.

Note: You should not update your firmware unless you are experiencing
problem with your OptoRite drive.

B. Windows

Nero 5 is used to create CD-R. You need to install InCD.

Roxio 6 has to separate CD creators. EZ CD Creator creates CD-R disks.
Drag to CD is used to format the CD-RW.

As for the BIOS, if they make the CD-RW drive then it should be the BIOS of
the CD drive.
